Conference Expansion: Who's Going Where?

Conference Expansion: Who's Going Where?

Confused yet? We don't blame you. After two full years of conference expansion the landscape looks murky for some conferences while others appear to be more settled. Here is the latest on which schools are going where but as always, things could change abruptly. NOTE: This current expansion update is for football only, as some schools are in multiple conferences depending on the team sport.

Atlantic Coast Conference

The ACC will expand to 14 teams with the additions of Pittsburgh to the Coastal division and Syracuse to the Atlantic division. They are currently expected to begin ACC play in the 2014 season.

Big East

Memphis, UCF, Houston SMU, Navy, San Diego State and Boise State will be joining the Big East. Navy is planning on joining in 2015, while Memphis, UCF, Houston, SMU, San Diego State and Boise State are slated for 2013.

The Big East loses West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Syracuse, but West Virginia's exit date is currently unknown due to competing lawsuits in non-binding mediation from both the school and the league. If West Virginia is allowed to compete in the Big XII this year, it is possible both Pitt and Syracuse could follow suit and play in the ACC this year due to precedent being set by West Virginia. The Big East's bylaws ask for a 27-month waiting period, which currently requires a 2014 exit for the three teams.

Big XII

Missouri and Texas A&M have left for the SEC but the Big XII gains TCU and West Virginia, pending litigation on West Virginia's exit from the Big East.

Big Ten

There are no additions or subtractions from the 12-team league.

Pac-12

There are no additions or subtractions from the 12-team league.

Southeastern Conference

The SEC will add two teams to its conference to form 14 teams, effective July 1. Texas A&M will be in the West while Missouri will be in the East.

Western Athletic Conference

Texas-San Antonio and Texas State will be joining the WAC effective July 1. Nevada, Fresno State and Hawaii will leave for the MWC effective July 1.

Mountain West Conference

The MWC loses TCU to the Big XII this year while Boise State and San Diego State will go to the Big East in 2013.

Conference USA

Memphis, Houston, SMU and UCF will be leaving the conference to join the Big East in 2013. If the conference does not add four more teams to the league it will not have the required team minimum (12) to hold its conference championship in 2013. According to CBSSports.com reporter Brett McMurphy, sources have indicated that C-USA has contacted Temple about the school's possible interest in joining C-USA after it failed to get an invite from the Big East.

Sun Belt Conference

South Alabama will become an FBS team in 2013 and join the Sun Belt Conference.

Mid-American Conference

Massachusetts became an FBS team in 2012 and will be joining the East division this year. The Minutemen will become bowl-eligible in 2013. Bowling Green will move to the West division giving each division seven members.

Independent

Navy will join the Big East in 2015. This leaves BYU, Notre Dame and Army as the three remaining Independents in FBS football.
