Surprise 6 at Scottsdale 1

Scottsdale took an early lead they never gave up in their 6-1 victory over Scottsdale on the road.

Royal Justin Marks upped his record to 4-0 by holding the Scorpions to a run on four hits in four innings. The southpaw fanned three with no free passes while tossing 45 pitches, 29 for strikes. He departed with a 3-1 lead.

The Saguaros went up 2-0 in the second thanks to the work of the seven through nine hitters. Third baseman Michael Almanzar got it started with a one-out single. The Red Sox prospect advanced to third on a ground-rule double by Kansas City's Brian Fletcher and came home on a groundout. Ranger Hanser Alberto singled in Fletcher.

Surprise added another tally in the fourth when centerfielder Darrell Ceciliani (Mets) knocked in the Royals' Whit Merrifield, who reached via a single. The lead was extended with a run in the seventh when Bryce Brentz singled and eventually crossed home on a single by fellow Red Sox farmhand Christian Vazquez. Two final runs came in the ninth when Alberto opened with a triple and raced home on Brentz' two-out single. Brentz advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Chris McGuiness (Texas).

Kolten Wong was the only Cardinal to participate on Thursday. He went 1-for-4 with a walk. Wong's only hit came in the first on a line drive single to right. He popped out to short to start the third then flew out to center in the fourth to strand Ceciliani at second. The second baseman worked a base-on-balls as the lead-off batter in the seventh. Wong stole his third base of the Fall campaign but was easily thrown out on a play at the plate when Brentz singled. He came up in the ninth with Alberto on third and one out but fanned swinging.

Friday's game: at Phoenix, 12:35 pm MT (2:35 pm CT), Boone Whiting (2-1, 2.03)
