Rangers Winterball Roundup – 11/2

Tigres del Licey outfielder Engel Beltre went 2-for-4 with a triple on Friday, giving him 20 three-baggers between the regular season and winterball this year. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action in the Texas Rangers' system.

Arizona Fall League: Surprise 1 – (@) Phoenix 3
12-9-1, 0.5

Friday afternoon's loss to Phoenix dropped the Saguaros out of first place in the Arizona Fall League's West Division. They trail the Peoria Javelinas by half a game.

Although the Rangers sent a very young crop of position players to the Fall League this offseason, they've all played well and impressed scouts thus far. The youngest player in the league, shortstop Luis Sardinas, impressed on Friday with three singles in four at-bats. He did commit an error (his second) and was caught stealing twice.

The Fall League is a undoubtedly a hitter-friendly circuit, but it's still nice to see youngsters like Sardinas and Hanser Alberto excelling at the plate.

Sardinas was the only Rangers position player to appear in Friday's contest. Through eight games, he's 12-for-33 (.364) with two doubles and a home run. He's walked twice, struck out five times, and stolen one base in three tries.

Ryan Rodebaugh (3.72 ERA/.235 BAA) finished the game for Surprise with a 1-2-3 eighth inning, throwing 12 of his 16 pitches for a strike. He fanned one.

Rodebaugh's stat-line through seven appearances––9.2 ip, 8 h, 4 r, 3 bb, 10 k.

Licey left fielder Engel Beltre had a single and a triple in four at-bats.

The speedy Beltre is proving to be an absolute triples machine this year. After hitting 17 three-baggers with Double-A Frisco during the regular season, he has three in his first nine games for Licey.

Centerfielder Leonys Martin was 0-for-3 while third baseman Mike Olt went 0-for-2 with a walk. Martin committed his third fielding error, and his second in as many nights, but also picked up an outfield assist.

Both Martin and Olt were lifted in the eighth inning of the 12-3 defeat.

This year's Tigres del Licey club is loaded with exciting young talent. In addition to the top Rangers prospects with the team, Friday's lineup and pitching staff included Dee Gordon (Dodgers), Domingo Santana (Astros), Christian Bethancourt (Braves), Julio Teheran (Braves), and Randall Delgado (Braves).

Later this month, Rangers top prospect Jurickson Profar will switch spots with Gordon as the Tigres' everyday shortstop.

Cibao shortstop Leury Garcia went hitless in four at-bats, dropping his average to .296 through 12 games. After starting his winterball campaign with a bang, the 21-year-old Garcia is just 2-for-19 in his last five contests.

Lara's Guilder Rodriguez appeared as a defensive replacement in center field and flew out in his only plate appearance. The veteran utility man is 5-for-34 (.147) at the plate in 14 winterball games.

Liga Paralela (Venezuela Minor League)

La Guaira second baseman Alex Gonzalez (.351/.500/.378 in 11 games) went 0-for-2 but walked three times. Gonzalez is 13-for-37 (.351) with 10 walks and four strikeouts in 11 Liga Paralela games.

DH Tomas Telis (.244/.292/.289) helped push Caracas to a 3-1 victory by going 2-for-3 with an walk and an RBI. Shortstop Edwin Garcia (.204/.328/.245) went without a hit in three at-bats.

Elio Castillo, playing third base for the Magallanes club, went 0-for-3 and committed a fielding error.

Aragua's Teodoro Martinez entered in mid-game as a pinch hitter. The Venezuela native was hitless in three at-bats, and he, too, had an error.

Mexican Pacific League

After getting a much-needed day off on Thursday, Mazatlan's Joey Butler returned to form by reaching base safely in all four plate appearances. The 26-year-old outfielder went 1-for-1 with a double, three walks, and a run batted in.

In 12 winterball games, Butler is 9-for-39 (.231) with three doubles, a home run, six walks, and 14 strikeouts.
