Southern Miss got off to a great start to the 2012-2013 basketball season with a huge win over Western Kentucky to open the year. Now, they head over to their first road test in the Georgia Bulldogs. Eagle freshman Deon Edwin talked with GoldenEaglePride.com about the game and his role early in the season.

Deon Edwin has already made the adjustment to life at the Division One college basketball level. Though only 6'2, the athletic freshman grabbed 8 rebounds to lead the team Saturday night, and he also put in 7 points.

So far, so good.

"It was really great to get out there and get my first basket as a Golden Eagle," he said. "I am living a dream getting to play college basketball. It was great being in front of our home crowd and being able to hold on and win."

Edwin talked about how he sees his role this season.

"My role on the team is to bring energy of the bench and provide some defensive spark," he added. "Sometimes they'll need me to score too and I just try to do my part to help us win, whatever that means for us on a given night."

Edwin, originally from the Virgin Islands, played his High School ball at Red Lion Christian Academy. He's taking a big step to this level.

"The biggest adjustment for me has been the speed of the game," he said. "It is so different. I try to slow the game down. It took me some time, I really struggled at first in practice but I'm picking up things now and not thinking so much."

As his team heads for Athens, Edwin says he is ready and his team is eager to get back on the floor against an SEC opponent.

"We have prepared hard for these guys in practice," he said. "We know our offense will come, so most of our focus has been on the defensive side of the ball and what we can do to improve there.

"We are working hard on our zone because we know Georgia will have some shooters. Playing at their place is going to be tough, but we've worked hard and feel like we are ready."

The Eagles will tip off at Georgia Thursday night at 7:00 CST. It will be televised on Fox Sports Net.
