Central High School captured its third consecutive Class 3-A Kentucky state final with a 12-6 victory over Belfry before 7,116 fans at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. The Yellowjackets scored on the second play of overtime.
WRAP-UP: Neither team scored in the second half. Central was then held on downs to start the overtime period. The Yellowjackets then scored on the second play from scrimmage during their overtime possession, a 15-yard pass from Sydney Tedford to Marcel Malone. Central has now won three straight 3-A titles and the Yellowjackets have five state titles since 2007.
KEY PLAY: After losing five yards on first down, Central quarterback Sydney Tedford took the snap and fired over the middle of the field to Marcel Malone. A Belfry defender had his hand on the ball but Malone secured it for the TD. It was the only catch of the game for Malone and just the third completion for Central.
MVPs: Running back Deris Cox rushed for 102 yards and scored on a 28-yard run for Central, while Austin Hatfield had 105 yards rushing for Belfry.
STAT LINE: Central won the title despite being outgained 221-175 and running just 39 plays to 57 for the Pirates.
