Rummel High School (14-0) claimed the 5A State Championship over Barbe High School (13-2) with a 35-14 victory on Saturday night in the Superdome. The story of the night was the ability of the Rummel defense to almost totally shut down the Barbe passing attack, something that hasn't been done all season. The Rummel defense allowed Barbe to gain 316 total yards, with only 167 coming through the air.
Barbe tight-end Desean Smith led the Bucs in receiving with 85 yards and two touchdowns through the air. Smith was also name most outstanding player of the game for Barbe, an honor that he was more than deserving of given his impact early in the game.
Quarterback Damian Williams was name the most outstanding player for Rummel. Williams finished the game 11-13 for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns through the air, in addition to another 52 on the ground.
The Rummel offense was very balanced tonight by throwing for 193 yards and rushing for 181 behind the effort of Junior Keith Fulton, who finished the game with 133 yards and 3 touchdowns on the ground.
Rummel struck first in the game when Damian Williams connected with Steven Dunbar for a 12-yard touchdown with just over a minute remaining in the first quarter. Barbe answered with a 25-yard touchdown through the air to DeSean Smith with 7:32 remaining in the first half.
Rummel was able to go into halftime with a lead after Williams connected on another passing touchdown, only this time is was to tight end Cethan Carter on a 12-yard pass right before halftime.
Barbe was able to regain the lead early in the second half when quarterback Kennon Fontenot connected with DeSean Smith on a 23-yard touchdown pass. This was the last time Barbe would punch one in the end zone.
From here on out, it was all Rummel. Their defense forced two turnovers by Fontenot of Barbe and never looked back. Running back Keith Fulton answered the call and scored on three consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter. Fulton scored on runs of three, four, and four, respectively.
It was definitely a team effort for Rummel in the victory, which marks the first Louisiana State Championship in school history.
