They waited until the last minute, but Korean lefty Ryu Hyun-jin and the Dodgers have come to terms on a contract.
At the last minute, the Dodgers have agreed to terms with South Korean left-handed pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin, first reported by Mike Petriello. The Dodgers won the negotiating rights to the 25 year old southpaw last month and spent the entirety of their allotted window trading offers with Ryu's agent, Scott Boras. Jon Heyman reports that the contract spans 6 years, is worth $36 million (with up to $1 million a year in performance bonuses) and includes an opt-out option after the fifth year.
Ryu spent 7 seasons in the Korean Baseball League, pitching for the Hanwha Eagles. He was named Rookie of the Year and league MVP in 2006, won 5 strikeout titles, 2 ERA titles and made the All Star team every season. Over his career, he posted a 2.80 ERA in 190 games. He made 5 appearances in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, allowing 2 runs in 7 innings.
This gives the Dodgers a cornucopia of starters for 2013. With their most recent additions of Greinke and Ryu, the club also has
Clayton Kershaw
,
Josh Beckett
,
Chad Billingsley
,
Ted Lilly
,
Chris Capuano
and
Aaron Harang
. General Manager Ned Colletti will surely be shopping at least one or two of those starters over the next few months.
An in-depth look at the signing will be available once the deal is official.
