Outback Bowl family affair for Floyd (w/video

A South Carolina native, Michigan senior cornerback J.T. Floyd is already hearing plenty of bowl-related ‘talk' from back home, and he expects to hear even more as the Wolverines prepare for a matchup with the Gamecocks on New Years Day.

Growing up just under two hours from the University of South Carolina, Michigan senior cornerback J.T. Floyd is used to hearing and seeing the Gamecock Red that the Wolverines are set to encounter in the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day. Floyd's connection to the state made finding out news of the bowl pairing pretty easy.

"My initial thought was, why is my phone ringing so many times?" said Floyd. "I probably had 15, 20 text messages and the same amount of missed calls. I knew something was up."

With an uncle that played for South Carolina in the 80's, the preparation for and Outback Bowl itself is sure to be a fun family affair for the Floyds. But as J.T. admits, his uncle isn't the family member he's most looking forward to doing a little bit of jawing with over the next few weeks.

"Actually my grandfather, he's probably the biggest South Carolina fan you'll ever meet," Floyd said. "So I'm interested to see --- me and him talked a little bit this week but we didn't talk about the game, so I'm interested to see what he has to say about it."

Despite the family ties, Floyd didn't fancy himself a fan of South Carolina as a child. For Floyd, it was Florida State and Michigan. But when the recruiting first began during his high school football career, the Gamecocks were right there with an offer, making this game a little more meaningful.

"It's exciting for me," said Floyd. "Sort of life coming full circle for me. They were my first offer, and now it's my last collegiate game. It's just another opportunity—I'm blessed to play for the Maize and Blue against South Carolina."
