Bowl win adds motivation for next season

After Arizona's New Mexico Bowl victory, the players and coaches took time to reflect on the season, look ahead, and more.

To some people that watched the New Mexico Bowl, Arizona's victory does not mean much beyond the comeback and end result. However, the win represents much more for the Wildcats and builds confidence within the team for next season.

"It's great," Marquis Flowers said. "When Coach Rich Rod first came in, you didn't know what to expect, but we all bought in. We'd like to get a couple more wins, but we can't change the past. We got a good one today."

Rodriguez agrees with Flowers that the season could have been better, but the head coach also thinks that the memories of the season will be a good framework for the future.

"It's probably too early to reflect," Rodriguez said. "There are a couple like Marquis said, that we'd like to have back. But at the same time, there are a lot of memories that everyone in the program and hopefully all of us that watch the program can enjoy for many years. I want the seniors to have the best experience of their life this year."

The biggest memory of the season may not be Arizona's bowl performance, but rather what Ka'Deem Carey was able to do.

"It was an overall great season this season," Carey said. "I had teammates that pushed me through in the weight room. I had coach pushing me on the field. Without them I couldn't have played this far. We just have to continue on next year."

Flowers believes that the benefit of being around the coaching staff for longer will pay off next season.

"We're going to go into the off season with a full year and Coach Rich Rod," Flowers said. "Our strength and conditioning staff know what we've got to do to come out and compete for a Rose Bowl next year."

Now that the season is over, Rodriguez is able to look at the juniors that will become seniors and hope that they have a similar, if not better, season next year.

"I hope the underclassmen have the same kind of experience, even better, in their senior year," Rodriguez said. "That's why I'm so proud of our senior class. Because the way they bought in, and the way they were able to lead this year, I think sets a good example for Ka'Deem and Marquis, and our younger guys."
