Gigantes del Cibao players Nelson Cruz and Leury Garcia had two hits apiece on Thursday. Lone Star Dugout takes a look at all of the day's winterball action on the Texas Rangers' system.
Dominican Winter League
Cibao’s
Nelson Cruz
(2/5) and
Leury Garcia
(2/4) collected two singles apiece on Thursday. Cruz got the start at DH while Garcia played third base.
Garcia also added a pair of stolen bases, giving him nine on the season, in addition to his ninth fielding error.
The Toros del Este and Tigres del Licey played 16 innings, a game that took more than six hours to complete. Outfielder
Engel Beltre
remained in for the entire game and went 0-for-6, striking out three times and walking twice.
Aguilas Cibaenas reliever
Johan Yan
worked around a hit and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. He didn’t permit a run.
Venezuelan Winter League
Lara’s
Guilder Rodriguez
made the most of a rare start by going 1-for-2 with a triple, a walk, and a run-scoring sacrifice fly. The utility infielder played second base and batted second.
Elvis Andrus
went 1-for-5 for a second consecutive night.
Appearing in his second LVBP game, reliever
Ben Rowen
gave up two runs (one earned) without recording an out. The Virginia Tech product yielded two hits and a walk, throwing 20 pitches to four hitters.
Yangervis Solarte
raised his batting average to .276 with two singles in four at-bats. He also had two RBI and his second error in as many nights.
Mexican Pacific League
No Rangers appeared in Mexico on Thursday.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Caguas second baseman
Janluis Castro
reached base in all five of his plate appearances on Thursday, going 3-for-3 (all singles) with two walks. He also scored three runs, drove home two, stole a base, and committed a fielding error.
Castro, a Rangers 2012 Rangers draft pick, is now hitting .333 in limited winterball action.
Left fielder
Jared Hoying
tripled once and walked once in three trips. He stole his second base. Catcher
Zach Zaneski
was 0-for-3, dropping his average to .211.
