COP: UNC In Touch With Russell

FORT MYERS, Fla. --- North Carolina continues to cast a wide net with its recruitment of 2014 perimeter players, which has included keeping tabs on Montverde (Fla.) Academy guard D'Angelo Russell.

Russell said after his opening game at the City of Palms Classic that North Carolina recently informed him they planned to watch him at the event later this week.

"I talked to Coach Hubert Davis before the tournament and he said he was going to come down here and check me out," Russell said after Montverde's opening win. "He came down to practice a couple of times, but I'm interested in them."

At this stage, Russell has yet to talk to Roy Williams, but the UNC assistants have discussed a possible visit with him.

"They said the summer time is the best chance to get down there," Russell said. "I just gave them my dad's number and they talked to my dad."

Is their mutual interest?

"I'm definitely interested in them, but I'm just letting the class go out and see where I best fit in and see who is going to be there when I get there," Russell said.

To go with interest from North Carolina, Russell has had Georgetown, Nebraska, Florida, Ohio State, Louisville and Kentucky watch him in either a game or practice recently.

"I'm just giving everybody the contact information for my dad and just letting him talk to them and just going from there, " Russell added.

Russell is currently regarded by Scout.com as the No. 1 shooting guard and the No. 10 overall prospect in the 2014 recruiting class.
