UM Recruiting Scoop: 1/3

Read on for all the latest recruiting news and information surrounding the University of Miami, with complete analysis from CanesTime's Mike Bakas.

* 4-star OL Denver Kirkland told Scout yesterday that his top three schools are Miami, Florida State, and Ole Miss. This makes sense, as the Canes and Noles have been at the top for awhile now and Ole Miss and FSU are the only schools he's taken an official visit to. He plans to visit the Canes on Jan 18 (and USF Jan 11). It could go either way at this point, and each staff's recruiting efforts over the next month will likely tell the story. The Canes wanted to sign four offensive linemen in this year's class, and they have three committed. Kirkland would round out a very good O-Line class.

* 3-star LB Jermaine Grace told Scout last night that Miami still leads for his services. At 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds, Grace is one of the fastest and most athletic linebackers in the entire state. He visited here last month and says a big reason for the Canes leading is because of his relationship with the coaches. That won't change down the stretch, despite planning visits to schools like Florida, Tennessee, and Louisville. The Canes are in great shape here.

* DT prospect Quay Bain committed to LSU on Wednesday in a decision that should be monitored closely over the next few years. Why? He really wanted in Miami's class, but was simply never given that chance. He committed to Florida State last November but they went in different directions this past spring. He took several unofficial visits to Miami during the offseason but the Canes never accepted his commitment. Keith Bryant and Jaynard Bostwick remain the two biggest priorities at DT -- and the Canes are in good shape with both of them.

* The Scout.com recruiting team covering the Under Armour practices all this week came up with their position rankings for the entire week of practice. QB Kevin Olsen was listed as the No. 2 quarterback for Team White, just behind 5-star Michigan commit Shane Morris. DB commit Artie Burns was listed as the No. 3 DB on Team White. Burns has the ability to play either cornerback or safety in college. Kirkland was listed as the No. 3 OL for Team Black. He's been playing right tackle. 5-star Matthew Thomas lived up to his ranking and was voted as the top LB for Team Black. Thomas plans to visit Florida State, Miami, Alabama, USC, and Georgia before making a final decision on Signing Day.
