Semper Fi MVP: Nadir Barnwell

CARSON, Calif. -- Defensive back Nadir Barnwell came up with three important plays on Friday night that helped the East to a 17-14 victory over the West...

Before quarterback Eddie Printz could direct the 12-play, 90-yard game-winning drive, the East needed enough stops to keep the Semper Fi Bowl a one-possession game. And more often than not, those stops came because Piscataway (N.J.) Township cornerback Nadir Barnwell was exactly where he needed to be.

Three different times on third down the three West quarterbacks directed their passes at Oregon committed wide receiver Darren Carrington, and all three times Barnwell smartly positioned himself to break up the pass, forcing punts. The centerpiece of Rutgers' 2013 recruiting class knew exactly where to be at the most critical moments, the true mark of an elite player.

Barnwell has great measurables, the size, speed and length to frustrate top receivers, but it was the situational awareness he showed Friday night at the Home Depot Center that set him above the rest.
