ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- For a family from the state of Michigan, a trip to Orlando, Florida in the middle of a cold, snowy winter is the definition of a vacation in every sense of the word. The family of 2013 Michigan quarterback commitment Shane Morris came down to the sunshine state ready to take in some rays and enjoy all of the amusement parks and excitement the area had to offer.
Shane, however, wasn't riding roller coasters or jumping in and out of swimming pools.
Instead, the Warren De La Salle senior was spending the heavy portion of his day preparing to compete in the 2013 Under Armour All-America Game, with all of four practices to entrench himself in a brand new offense with brand new teammates surrounding him.
"Learning an offense in five days, learning new players and what kind of routes they run and how they're really going to break and who's your linemen, the center exchange -- its all really tough," Morris told GoBlueWolverine. "But it's something I'm going to have to get used to because I'm going to have to come in at Michigan and right away I've got to learn the play book. I got to know everything and learn it fast and know it in and out."
"That's what I'm trying to do. I felt like I knew everything pretty well and learned everything pretty easy this week. Just got to keep going now and look forward to Michigan. That's all that matters now."
Morris utilized the frustrating showing to his advantage, adjusting and accepting the speed he'll see on a daily basis at the next level.
"Everyone's fast. Everyone's a lot faster than me," he laughed. "I had some runs, got hit, and the speed of the game is just ridiculous. Everyone in pads is still so fast. It's college football. It's something you've got to get used to, playing against the best kids in America."
Helping to protect Morris from some of the physical punishment team "Highlight" was trying to inflict were a few of his future teammates along the offensive line. And for the most part, the future Wolverines kept their buddy standing upright.
"With Dawson, Logan and Kugler in there -- I knew I was going to be protected," said Morris. "We did a great job in protection today, I think. I think we kept Nkemdiche off of us. I mean they did really well, we doubled him a lot though but I think we kept him off of us. Our guards did great, tackles did great and our line played well today and Michigan commits all played well today."
Set to enroll at Michigan in June, Morris won't be waiting around in the months leading up to his official move in day. Instead, it's just extra time to ready himself for the quarterback position in Ann Arbor.
"Focus is just to work," said Morris. "Get bigger, get stronger, faster, work on throwing, footwork -- spending a lot of time on campus, spending a lot of time with the guys that are already up there. I'm forty minutes down the road so I'm going to be up there a lot."
"It's going to be a fast couple of months. I'm going to get up there and compete the best I can. I'm not expecting to go in there and start obviously with Gardner there, but I'm not going to go in and just know I'm the backup. I'm going to push him to be the best he can be so he can make our team the best we can be."
