With Kolney Cassel's recruitment closed, he is just focused on rehabbing his broken leg and getting ready to sign with the Mustangs, but Cassel broke some big news about one of SMU's remaining prospects, Seattle Prep (Wash.) athlete Tere Calloway.
"They're full. I talked to Tere. He's not going to go to SMU. Coach Mason said they were full," Cassel said. "He said he didn't know where Tere got all that stuff from that they had one spot left."
Calloway was one of the remaining players SMU was targeting with their class almost full, but with the commitment of Dallas Madison DB Jesse Montgomery, Calloway ran out of time to commit.
"I just know Tere waited a little too long," Cassel said. "I know he wanted to wait, but he waited too long to commit cause I know Mason was really wanting him for a little while."
Calloway and Cassel had talked after Calloway's all-star game on Saturday and that is when Cassel found out that his friend was not going to be a part of this class for SMU.
"He just told me that SMU was in it and it was also down to Southern Miss and Nevada," Cassel said. "Then I said well SMU doesn't have another spot so he said I know so it is down to two."
Cassel talked with defensive coordinator Tom Mason on Tuesday and was also able to catch the SMU win over Fresno State in the Hawaii Bowl. Cassel was impressed and was intrigued by how much SMU quarterback Garrett Gilbert ran the ball.
"It was fun to watch. It was pretty cool. Gilbert kind of runs more than I thought he would. I didn't know if that was part of the offense or what," Cassel said.
Cassel will be on campus this summer to get ready but will be signing in less than a month to make it official that he will be headed to the Hilltop.
