When the Connecticut basketball team sat down for a team meal in South Bend, Ind., in 2012, guard Ryan Boatright got some very bad news. Boatright has moved past that moment and is having a tremendous season for the Huskies.

Guard Ryan Boatright is having an outstanding sophomore season at Connecticut, averaging 16.2 points, 2.8 rebounds and leading the Huskies in assists with 63. With 227 points in 14 games heading into Saturday’s game at No. 17 Notre Dame, he is closing in on his freshman total of 260 points in 25 games.

Boatright is from Aurora, Ill., just outside Chicago, and Saturday’s game gives him the opportunity to play before family and friends. That opportunity was taken away last season when UConn played at South Bend.

NCAA investigations into his eligibility sidelined Boatright for nine games last season. He missed the first six games of the year and then missed three more games when the NCAA reopened his case in January.

“I felt really bad for him,” backcourt mate Shabazz Napier said. “He really wanted to play. He had a lot of people there to see him.”

After Tuesday’s win over DePaul, Boatright said it was inevitable he would flash back to that even when the Huskies arrived in South Bend Friday.
