After announcing his official hire on Jan. 1, Bobby Petrino announced Saturday that Kevin Peoples has resigned from his position at Western Kentucky.

Peoples will reportedly accept a position at UAB.

He brought several recruits to WKU shortly before and after his official hiring, including Dalton Patterson, Lonnie Turner and Maurice Bennett, among others.

Bennett, a three-star junior college prospect, said the news was "surprising."

"I just kind of want to know why he (Peoples) left," the defensive tackle said. "I still like Western Kentucky, whoever they bring in, ya know.

"I can't explain it right now."

Bennett, who was recruited by Peoples to Arkansas when he was in high school, still had Peoples phone number when he arrived at East Mississippi Community College.

When he reconnected with Peoples to discuss a possible recruitment opportunity, Peoples informed Bennett he had moved to Western Kentucky.

Bennett's recruitment moved quickly from there, signing his letter-of-intent with the Hilltoppers on Dec. 19.

Peoples hiring as the Hilltoppers defensive ends coach/recruiting coordinator wasn't announced officially until Jan. 1, after previously serving on the staff at Arkansas for three seasons.

It's unknown at this time who will replace Peoples on Petrino's staff.

Both Turner and Patterson are on official visits to WKU this weekend, and will be reached for comment on Peoples' resignation after their visits are concluded.
