Position:Defensive End/Tight End
Location: Concord (Calif.) De La Salle
Weight: 245 pounds
Recruiting:Hooper took an official visit to Washington earlier in the year and was planning January visits to Stanford, California and Oregon. After checking out the Cardinal over the weekend, the athlete decided he had seen enough and committed early on the visit. In fact, Hooper was told he had cleared admissions on Friday, the first night he was on campus and committed on the spot.
What to Like: Hooper is an excellent all around player who has the talent to play for just about anyone on both sides of the ball. He's best known as a defensive end but was recruited by the Cardinal to play tight end. He's a big, physical player with a great frame and is an excellent all around athlete. He comes from a great HS program so you know you're getting a kid who knows how to play the game the right way and a player who is used to winning.
What may be of concern: Hooper was used more as a blocker for the Spartans last season and caught just 11 balls. He'll be a terrific blocker because of his size, strength and toughness but will have to prove he has the hands to be a dependable pass catcher in Stanford's offense. The Cardinal are quickly becoming Tight End U and Hooper will be given plenty of opportunities to show he can be an impact player down the road.
Overall Analysis: This is an excellent pickup for Stanford as Hooper has the talent and intangibles you're looking for in an impact player. They had to beat out several other Pac 12 programs and at one point, Cal appeared to have the inside track but with Hooper committing so early on his visit, it was obvious that Stanford was where his heart was the entire process.
