How did Watkins find his recent Junior Day visit at Michigan State?
"I'm exhausted," said Watkins. "The trip was good and I didn't want to leave the game. It was pretty good as I got to speak with head coach Mark Dantonio and he said he's going to evaluate my tape a little more and I could get an offer."
They say first impressions mean a lot and Watkins stresses his are high for the Spartans head coach.
"My impression of Coach Dantonio is high," said Watkins. "He makes you feel calm. Sometimes I get nerves and sometimes I think about it and I'm ok and stay calm. He just made me feel calm."
Watkins may have seen a little extra during his visit having arrived early but the extra time may have showed him why a Spartans offer would be an honor.
"We were about 30-minutes early," explained Watkins. "So we got a chance to look around. One of the neat things was getting to put on a jersey and take a picture with it on. It would mean everything to earn an offer from Michigan State. I've always wanted to earn an offer from them and would place them as one of my top schools."
While his visit allowed for some bonding with the Spartans head coach there is already a coach involved with Watkins he feels good about.
"I already knew (assistant) coach (Mike) Tressel before I went up there," said Watkins. "We had a chance to talk during the game and were joking about the game and how we wanted to see Branden Dawson dunk. Then he said something and the whole crowd started going crazy and Dawson came out so it was pretty sweet."
Depending upon how long his status as an uncommitted prospect last Watkins feels positive a summer camp visit is possible with the Spartans.
Spartan Digest will continue to follow up with Watkins as he learns more about his status with the Spartans.
