Kansas football coach Charlie Weis named Clint Bowen the team’s new linebacker coach, Friday. Bowen replaces DeMontie Cross, who is moving to join Gary Patterson’s staff at TCU in a similar position.

Bowen coached safeties and special teams in 2012 and was defensive coordinator under former coach Mark Mangino.

Bowen’s experience made him a logical choice for Weis, who will look to replace him at his former position.

The promotion is another great moment for Bowen, who is as much of a great program guy as Kansas has. Bowen played at Kansas and rose through the coaching ranks at Kansas. When Weis selected Bowen to join his staff in 2012, his return was celebrated by players who felt that he deserved the opportunity to stay when Mangino was forced out following the 2009 season.

Confidence is high that Weis will add another coach to the staff that will be a great fit for a program and defense that will welcome an abundance of new talent in 2013.
