Senior Bowl: Running Back Rankings

Green Bay's top two running backs at the end of the season weren't on the 53-man roster until December. For the Packers, there's more to being a running back than running the ball. Several backs flashed their all-around skills during Tuesday's Senior Bowl practices in Mobile, Ala.

1. Stepfan Taylor – Taylor, like he was at Stanford, will be an every-down back in the NFL. He can run, he can catch and he can pass protect. He's the definition of the phrase "jack of all trades, master of none." On the first play of an 11-on-11 session on Tuesday, Taylor ran through an arm tackle near the line of scrimmage and ripped off a big gain.

2. Mike Gillislee – The knock on Gillislee at Florida is he didn't play up to his 207-pound frame. That wasn't an issue in Tuesday's blitz drill. After losing the first rep, we (unofficially, of course) had him down as going 4-0. During 11-on-11, he showed strength by carrying a tackler several yards downfield, showed his speed on a run around right end and later used an excellent jump cut to gain another 10 yards.

3. Johnathan Franklin – Franklin has emerged as the best back on the North squad. As is the case with Gillislee, Franklin stood out in pass protection. We had him 3-1 in the drill. When blitzing safety Johnathan Cyprien tried to make a move, Franklin used excellent footwork to mirror Cyprien and win the rep. Early in 11-on-11, the UCLA runner showed some wiggle to break into the clear.

4. Andre Ellington – Ellington practiced on Monday but was absent on Tuesday, reportedly due to an injured hamstring. The former Clemson star is the major home run threat among the top draft prospects.

5. Kenjon Barner – Barner is even more a bigger home run threat than Ellington and surprised scouts in the blitz drill by going 4-1, by our tally. The knock on Barner is whether he has the strength to turn a 2-yard gain into a 4-yard gain. He'll also have to prove whether his success in Oregon's wide-open system will translate to the NFL.
