A Decision This Weekend?
Fontana (Calif.) Summit cornerback Charles Okonkwo is set to play in Sunday's West Coast Bowl Game, held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. However, Sunday could end up being more than just a game for the 6-foot-1, 170-pound athlete, as he could potentially be announcing his college decision during the event. "I'm going to announce prior to National Signing Day. I'm probably going to announce at the game tomorrow, I'm just not 100% sure," he said during Saturday's practice. The West Coast Bowl is Okonkwo's first All-American Game, though he did also recently compete in the Inland Empire Classic All-Star Game. Okonkwo, who also played at receiver and a little safety during his senior season, has also been keeping himself busy with visits. "I was out at New Mexico the week prior to this. It went great; the people are really friendly, the coaching staff was really nice. It was a good group of guys," he said. With one weekend left before National Signing Day, Okonkwo will finish out the process by taking a visit to Fresno State on February 1st. "This will be my first visit to Fresno State. I've been talking with Coach [Joe]Wade, Coach [Tim] McDonald, and their head coach, Coach [Tim] DeRuyter ," he said. Okonkwo said he has narrowed down his list to three: San Diego State, Fresno State, and Nevada. Though San Diego State is the sole program of the three he never officially visited, Okonkwo took an unofficial trip to campus last summer and has stayed in contact with the staff, talking with cornerbacks coach Tony White and safeties coach Danny Gonzales. When considering his options, Okonkwo, who is leaning towards majoring in Business, says that he is looking for a good fit both athletically and academically. "I'm just looking for a place where the coaching staff looks at me not only as a player, but also as a student, and will help me academically before athletically," he said.
