Ross Now Considering Cowboys And Bulldogs

Excitement in the final week of recruiting is sometimes a pleasant surprise. In this case the excitement is not wanted as Tyler (John Tyler), Texas Scout Top 300 prospect and Class 4A All-State wide receiver Fred Ross is contemplating his commitment to Oklahoma State and an offer from Mississippi State after making an official visit last weekend to Starkville, Miss.

"He is weighing his options," said John Tyler athletic director and head coach Ricklan Holmes. "He went on that visit to Mississippi State and he really enjoyed it."

Holmes, a former Oklahoma State defensive back who went on to play in the NFL with the New England Patriots, said that Ross had always planned to make the Mississippi State visit. He clarified that former Texas A&M women's basketball standout Aqua Franklin, who is now an assistant women's basketball coach at Mississippi State, is a cousin of Ross.

"I'm not sure what he saw or what about the visit got him so interested in Mississippi State, but I'll find out tomorrow," added Holmes.

"He is supposed to come to my office and we are going to talk about it. He is playing basketball tonight, and I'm fixing to go watch him in an hour or so. They are here (home) tonight against Nacogdoches."

Ross was hosted on his MSU visit by a friend and former Tyler Junior College wide receiver Jeremey Chappelle.

Ross has been committed to Oklahoma State since last February and is coming off two stellar seasons with the Lions including 76 receptions this past season for 1,453 yards and a total of 23 touchdowns. He caught 99 passes for 1,335 yards as a junior.

Ross has not answered phone calls going back to his official visit to Oklahoma State. The last time we spoke with him was before his visit to Stillwater.

There will be some speculation that Ross' commitment and his indecision could have been impacted by the recruitment of football and basketball teammate Tyus Bowser, who reportedly committed to Oklahoma State last week but is not a Cowboy pledge and apparently not going to be after a home visit with OSU head coach Mike Gundy earlier this week.

"That had nothing to do with it," said Holmes. "Fred's visit to Mississippi State was set up before any of this happened, and Fred was committed to Oklahoma State before they began showing interest in Tyus. It wasn't a reason."

Holmes said he thought Ross would be deciding whether to stay with his pledge to Oklahoma State or opt for Mississippi State. "He'll know by the 6th (Feb. 6 - signing day)," said Holmes. Recommended Stories
