SMU got an early jump on 2014 Austin Westlake quarterback Jordan Severt when the Ponies extended an offer last summer. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound signal caller has a rocket arm and would be a perfect fit for June Jones' Run N' Shoot offense.
"I was definitely excited about the offer when I got it and still am," Severt said. "I really like SMU a lot. They've shown a lot of interest in me, and that goes a long way. I would say they're one of my favorites right now."
Throughout the last six months, Severt has stayed in constant communication SMU quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison and defensive line coach Bert Hill, who also been by his high school on multiple occasions.
"I speak regularly with Coach Hill and Coach Morrison," he said. "Coach Hill has been down a few times, but I've been talking more and more to Coach Morrison. He's been giving me updates on the program, and he says I would be a great quarterback for them since I'm a strong pocket passer. They are both good guys, and I really like them."
Severt hopes to find out a little bit more about SMU when he attends Junior Day on February 16. Morrison recently extended the invitation, and Severt immediately booked his trip.
"I'm looking forward to getting up there and meeting Coach Jones," he said. "I also want to see the campus and the facilities and how I'll fit in. It's not too far from Austin, and I really like that so I'm looking for a home feel."
Severt has yet to pick up any other offers but has junior day invites from Alabama, Duke and LSU. While the recruiting process heats up, Severt is focused on working hard this spring.
Last season, he passed for 2,713 yards and 21 touchdowns and led Austin Westlake, which has produced NFL quarterbacks Drew Brees and Nick Foles, to the 5A Division II state quarterfinals.
"I think as an offense we have to improve as a whole," he said. "Individually, I want to work on my mobility. I'm playing basketball right now and keeping in shape so hopefully I can continue to get better this spring."
