The commitment: DE Shaquille Lawson, Daniel HS/Hargrave Military
Date committed: Mar. 6, 2011
Other options: Tennessee, East Carolina, Maryland
Position status: Now that Malliciah Goodman has exhausted his eligibility, there's an opening at the strong-side defensive end spot. Tavaris Barnes ended the 2012 season listed as the backup on the depth chart. He'll be challenged by a number of young players. Martin Aiken, Roderick Byers and Kevin Dodd will figure into the mix. On the weak-side, Corey Crawford is the returning starter with Victor Beasley, last year's team leader in sacks. Ebenezer Ogundeko will figure into the mix, too. It's possible that Lawson could play either position.
The evaluation: Lawson has the tools to develop into a solid pass rusher off the weak-side -- speed, athleticism, flexibility. He also possesses the strength and tackling ability to set the edge on the strong-side.
Estimated impact: 2013. Had Lawson qualified out of high school, it's very possible that he would have avoided a redshirt in 2012. So it's likely that he won't take a redshirt this fall. Lawson projects as a major contributor, if not a starter by the end of the season.
Commitment capsule: Lawson
