IE Breakdown: Max Redfield

IE Breakdown: Max Redfield

IrishEyes.com provides an in-depth breakdown of future Notre Dame athlete Max Redfield, out of Mission Viejo (Calif.) High.

One of the top secondary prospects in the country, Max Redfiwld should excite Notre Dame fans in the very near future. IrishEyes.com breaks down the two-way standout and FOXSportsNEXT.com four-star safety.

GENERAL BREAKDOWN

HT – WT – SPEED : Listed at 6-foot-2, 195-pounds, Redfield has a frame that will allow (strength & conditioning coach) Paul Longo to add more weight and muscle once he arrives on campus. On film, Redfield shows the ability to both separate as a receiver on offense, and use his speed to recover and make plays away from him in the defensive backfield.

QUICKNESS – AGILITY – BALANCE : Redfield shows extremely quick feet and the ability to make people miss on offense. As a defender, his agility and balance allow for him to avoid downfield blockers and make plays.

STRENGTH : Shows above average brute strength while having upper and lower body recoil to give him the complete package. However, because he plays high at times, he fails to have explosion on every play.

BODY FLEXIBILITY : Very natural bender with the ability to adjust his body as a defender or receiver.

PRODUCTION : Projected to play in the secondary, Redfield's skill set as a receiver could tempt Brian Kelly to dabble with thoughts of lining him up on offense. Shows the ability to support the run with physical aggression, but likes to lead with his head and shoulder and at times misses a solid tackle for the big hit. If this continues there should be future concerns with his physical durability in the head and shoulders area.

ON THE FIELD

Blessed with great hands that would allow him to be a high level receiver, Redfield looks destined for defense where he does a great job of reading the quarterback and anticipating the play. Shows quick feet but at times plays too high especially in his backpedal. This can be fixed with coaching and will allow him to better flip his hips, turn and run or plant and release forward. Because he's a superior athlete, Redfield at times relies on his natural athletic ability to make up for this area. Shows ability to move laterally and avoid blockers with his quickness. Because of his receiving ability Redfield should be expected to be a ball hawk defensively as he can play the ball in the air.

OVERALL

Redfield has used his great natural abilities to become one of the top players in the country and should be expected to continue his growth and compete early in his career. There are areas needing work as we mentioned above. Nevertheless, the Irish will add a player capable of being a future star on either side of the ball.
