Villanova is something of an enigma. In one week they toppled two ranked teams – Louisville and Syracuse. Yet they have also managed to lose two games to Providence, a program that DePaul defeated on the road.
One explanation for their inconsistency is that Villanova lives and dies by the three point shot. In the win over Louisville, the Wildcats shot 46.7% from beyond the arc. While in Sunday's 55-52 loss to Providence, Nova shot 13.3% on their trifectas.
When Nova lacks firepower and scores less than 65 points, they usually come up on the losing end. So perimeter defense will be a big key for the Blue Demons in Tuesday's game.
For DePaul to start turning those overtime losses into regulation wins they will also have to do more on the interior. They gave up way too many points in the paint to Jack Cooley and Notre Dame on Saturday.
For this game, DePaul will face a 6-10, 255 lb. force in the paint named Mouphtaou Yarou. Yarou is averaging 8.9 ppg and 6.7 rebounds per game.
One aspect where DePaul might be able to gain an advantage is in the turnover department. Villanova leads the league in turnovers with 16.1 per game. They also turned the ball over an awful lot in their last meeting with the Blue Demons – a season-high 28 times.
"We're going to get pressed Tuesday and we didn't do a great job with that last year when they played us here," said Villanova coach Jay Wright. "The biggest thing for us is to keep grinding, keep working every day. We know DePaul has the kind of scorers who can really get it going and we have to be ready Tuesday."
