Monday Countdown Update
With less than 48 hours to go, the UL staff is focused on keeping the 2013 Class together and adding the commitments of several of last weekend's visitors. The Cajuns picked up two commitments from this past weekend, OL B James Clark out of Sebastian River, Fla. and OL Christian Voelkel out of St. Pauls in Covington. We highlighted some of Clark's comments on his visit in our Sunday night story and Voelkel spoke to us today about his decision. "Basically what they offered me was an opportunity to grey-shirt my first year," Christian stated. "Coach Hudspeth said that if I come in and earn a spot that they will have a scholarship for me. Right now I will have my academic scholarship to begin school with in August. They are signing 3 tackles in this class because both starters graduated, so they didn't have another scholarship available for the offensive line." Christian Voelkel had to make a decision to turn down offers from Southeastern Louisiana and Louisiana-Monroe to accept UL's gray-shirt offer. "I wasn't an easy decision to make, both are good football programs," said Voelkel. "But it's not just about football, academics are important as well and ULL is the right place for me. Talking to coach Rodrigue, he feels I can come in and help them eventually with Andre Huval graduating after this upcoming season." Christian enjoyed the football banquet and getting the opportunity to meet LSU commitments Josh Boutte and Tevn Lawson. "The football banquet was really fun to attend," Christian mentioned. "If was fun to watch the season highlights, listen to guest speak and watch the players as they announced the awards. I had the chance to meet Josh Boutte and he is really a nice guy; we became good friends on the visit. I watched some of his film while we were together with coach Rodrigue. I spoke to Tevin Lawson for a few minutes but he was with the defensive line group so I really didn't talk to him long. Overall it was just a great experience and I'm happy with my decision to come to ULL and play football." While Christian Voelkel has made his decision, Tevin Lawson may wait until after signing day to make his decision. There is some talk of Lawson possibly taking a visit to Kentucky next weekend before making a final decision to sign. According to sources close to Josh Boutte, he will sign with LSU on Wednesday morning. He enjoyed the visit and likes the staff at UL, but he will keep his commitment to Coach Miles. The UL staff will be awaiting decisions on two Florida prep athletes Miami Carroll safety Simeon Thomas and North Miami's Troy McCollum. The two athletes have become good friends on recent recruiting trips and have come down to Louisiana and Hawaii. Both have hinted that they will wait until Wednesday to make their announcements. Another big target for UL is South Carolina; Wren High DT D.J. Jones that visited on January 25th and has some interest from Tennessee e. Jones is still not eligible and would probably be placed in junior college by any BCS program that is willing to sign him. The Cajuns have an outside chance should Jones want to sign and take his chances at working on his eligibility this summer. If you weren't in the Cajun Redzone chat room last night, we broke the news live that West Jefferson High WR Devin Scott returned from Nebraska without committing and announced he would sign with Louisiana on Wednesday. Scott committed to the Cajuns in late June last summer. Stay close to the Cajun Redzone for the latest breaking news on the 2013 UL Football Class.
