Darrell Wilson Named Secondary Coach

Following Robb Smith's departure to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood will hire Darrell Wilson to replace him on staff. Wilson, a long-time assistant coach with the Iowa Hawkeyes, will take over as secondary coach.

Long-time Iowa assistant coach Darrell Wilson is headed back to New Jersey, where he was named the Rutgers secondary coach by Kyle Flood.

Wilson takes over former defensive coordinator Robb Smith's spot as a full-time assistant after he left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.

"It gives me great pleasure to welcome Darrell and his family home," Flood said. "Darrell is a proven winner on the field and a proven recruiter in the State of Rutgers. He brings more than a decade of Big Ten experience with him but more important than all of that, Darrell is the right person for our program." Wilson has spent 11 seasons at Iowa as an assistant coach, recruiting New Jersey for the Hawkeyes. Wilson was active in the recruitment of current Scarlet Knights such as linebacker Quanzell Lambert and is responsible for three New Jersey players on the Iowa roster.

Prior to his time in the Big Ten, Wilson spent one year as the Rutgers running backs coach under Terry Shea. A Connecticut graduate, Wilson's first job was the head coach of Woodrow Wilson High School in Camden, N.J.

Graduate assistant Anthony Campanile is expected to remain at his current position where new NCAA recruiting rules give him a vastly expanded role off the field.

Flood did not announce his replacement for Smith as defensive coordinator, but linebackers coach Dave Cohen is expected to move into the role, sources said.
