Jensen Beach's Xavier Preston is fresh off a junior season where he recorded 50 tackles, 14 tackles for a loss, 4 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovered, 5 QB hurries, and 2 passes deflected.
"My best attributes is that I try and do everything technically correct," said Preston. "I spend a lot of time watching film and listing to my coaches.
The 6-foot-2, 214 pound outside linebacker just took a trip to Tampa to see what USF had to offer during junior day and liked what he saw.
"The visit went real well," said Preston. "They have a nice school, good coaches and I felt real comfortable while I was there."
The Deerfield Beach athlete got to tour the Bulls campus and facilities and was impressed.
"The campus was very nice, and they have real nice modern facilities," said Preston. "They had three fields, one turf, an outside agility area, and brand new locker rooms. Everything was big and brand new looking."
While on the visit Preston got to talk with USF coaches Ron Cooper and Coach Ray Woodie, and got a good vibe from the staff.
"Coach Woody is cool dude, he's real laid-back and honest and had a nice view on things," said Preston. "All the coaches I talked with there were real nice and straight up to talk with."
Preston also got a chance to talk with the Bulls head coach and liked the message the coach gave him
"Coach Taggart is also very easy going an honest," said Preston. "He was telling me to choose a school that was interested in me as a young man and not just as a football player and wanted to help better me not just on the field, but off it as well."
While talking with the Bull head coach, the Jenson Beach prospect received news that he got his first college offer.
"We were taking and he told me that I definitely had an offer to go to their school. I was very surprised, and it felt really good," said Preston. "Getting that first offer means something and it shows that they're interested and believe in me."
The rising senior said he just starting to get a lot of interest and letters, and lists a solid list of schools that he likes
"I like schools like Florida, UM, FSU, Alabama," said Preston. ""USF would be pretty high in that category of schools because I felt very comfortable while on their campus. They weren't just about football, but also big on education and everything else."
Preston said he already liked the Bulls program while on his visit and the offer just added to it and made him want to return.
"I definitely want to come back find out some more and meet some of the players," said Preston. "I'll probably come back for one of their spring practices or spring games. That way my mom can see it to."
While he doesn't have a time frame on when he'll decide, Preston does know what he's looking for.
"I'll be looking at education, coaching staff, player's attitudes," said Preston, "Also the schools general atmosphere and the comfort level I feel.
Preston carries a 3.5 GPA and said he'll be focusing on upcoming 7on7 tourneys with Treasure Coast's Child Please team and combines this spring.
