Three Keys Revisited: Navy vs. American

Navy made plays that mattered down the stretch and closed the game on a 7-2 run to take down the Eagles 50-44. The win was just the second for the Mids in Patriot League play this season and is a huge boost for a squad whose season could have just faded away after the recent loss to Army. Here is a look back at what the Mids did right on their way to the victory.

1) Keep American under 60 points

As mentioned in out preview of this game the American Eagles have a very defined magic number this season. By scoring just 44 points on Wednesday the Eagles saw their record when scoring less than 60 points slip to 0-12. Navy has been good defensively all year, and a combination of lockdown D on the shooters, and some dubious shot selection from the American players, saw the Mids hold the Eagles to just 4-18 shooting in the first half.

Perhaps most impressive is the fact that the Midshipmen led this game from wire to wire and never trailed.

2) Stop John Schoof

Whether it was by design or simply the flow of the game, Schoof was shut down by the Mids. The player who torched Navy in the first meeting between these teams, he was 8-of-10 from three scoring 27 points, took just two shots total in Alumni Hall. Though Schoof played for 30 minutes he was unable to find the catch and shoot opportunities which defined his play last time these two squads hit the floor. This ability to shut down an opponent's key scoring threat is something the Mids can build on in the Patriot League Tournament.

3) Play with pride

Perhaps most impressive is the fact that the Midshipmen led this game from start to finish and never trailed. Even when American got hot and dragged themselves back within a point at 43-42 with 4:28 left in the game there was no panic. This gut check moment was when the Mids had to show their pride in the jersey and they did so by rattling off that 7-0 run to put the game out of reach. If there was any question before today about this team's desire to win then that was put to rest for good on Wednesday night.
