Cal signee Caleb Coleman gives his review of the Golden Bears' new pass-centered offense on the first day of spring practice.
In attendance at
California
’s first football practice of the spring were one Golden Bear recruit – Berkeley linebacker
Michael Lazarus
-- and two signees, in the persons of
Ray Hudson
and
Caleb Coleman
.
Coleman took time out of his busy workout schedule as he prepares for his senior track season to take a gander at the offense he’ll be a part of come fall.
“It was good to be out there, for the first day,” Coleman said. “The offense, being the first day, they actually were throwing it around, and it looked
nice
. It looked good when they were spreading it out and it looks really good.”
Like many observers, Coleman was most impressed by redshirt freshman quarterback
Zach Kline
’s arm.
“I thought Kline had a lot of really nice throws,” Coleman said. “There was a deep post to
Bryce Treggs
that was a really nice play. It was an all-around great route by Treggs. He really burst out of his post cut and Kline was on the money. It was fun to watch.”
Coleman could hardly contain his anticipation at possibly being on the receiving end of one of those passes within just a few months.
“It’s really exciting,” Coleman said. “I can’t wait to get out there and start playing, strap it up. I think I can definitely see myself in the offense. Right now, I’m just working hard to be able to come in and compete in whatever role they give me when I get there. I’ll just embrace that role.”
Coleman is certainly entertaining a challenge, planning on wearing No. 21, the same number worn for the past three seasons by record-setting wide receiver
Keenan Allen
.
When he considers the weight of that number, he laughs.
“We’ll see,” he says. “Maybe. It’s still early.”
Coleman said he will try to make it to at least two more practices.
