Cubs August 5 Minor League Recap

The Cubs only minor league victories on Monday were turned in by the Mesa Cubs and the team in the DSL. Scott Baker's fifth rehab start was rained out for the third straight day in Daytona.

Roster Moves

The Cubs assigned 28th round draft pick Brad Renner to Mesa in the Arizona Rookie League.....The Iowa Cubs placed Barret Loux on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain. It is the third time he has been on the DL this season.

AAA—Tacoma 6, Iowa 5

A walk-off homer on the bottom of the ninth gave Tacoma (62-55) the win over Iowa (52-65).

At the Plate: Darnell McDonald (.233/.307/.335) had one of his better games as an I-Cub going 4-5 with a double and his third homer of the season, a solo shot to leadoff the game. Brad Nelson (.267/.344/.463) went 2-4 and smacked his 16th round tripper of the season. Daniel Lockhart is making the most of his opportunity going 2-4 and is 4-9 in two games. Ty Wright (.263/.322/.423) and Luis Flores (.203/.298/.329) added RBI.

On the Mound: Justin Grimm (0-2 9.00 ERA) struggled early allowing five runs over the first two innings but settled down and ended the night with eight punchouts and four straight shutout frames. He threw 101 pitches in his third outing for the I-Cubs. Casey Coleman (2-3 3.32) threw two scoreless innings of relief but surrendered the homer in the ninth and took the loss. It was the only hit he allowed.

AA—Jacksonville 6, Tennessee 4

Jacksonville (27-16, 61-49) won their 11th straight game handing Tennessee (24-19, 58-54) their fourth straight loss.

At the Plate: Tennessee had 13 hits, went 5-15 with RISP but could only plate four runs. John Andreoli (.301/.374/.439) upped his average to .301 going 3-4 with a double and two RBI. Javier Baez (.252/.317/.591) was 2-4 with a RBI and a walk. Rubi Silva (.284/.303/.487) entered the game as a pinch hitter and went 2-2.

On the Mound: AA has not been kind to Matt Loosen (1-3 7.48 ERA) at the trend continued as the right-hander threw 79 pitches in three innings allowing five runs on three walks and five hits, including a pair of homers. Hunter Cervenka (3-1 3.86) tossed two scoreless frames and Dayan Diaz (0-0 2.45) allowed an earned run in 1.2 frames. Tony Zych (2-4 2.74 ) retired the final four hitters. In order.

High A—Mother Nature 3, Daytona 0

For the third straight day, Daytona was rained out and the games will not be made up as the the don't face Bradenton the rest of the season. It was also the third straight day Scott Baker had tried to make his fifth rehab start. Since July 12 at home, Daytona has played only two regularly-scheduled, non-delayed nine inning games; and during the same time period Daytona has played three doubleheaders, had seven games postponed, had six games canceled with no make-up, and sat through six hours and 22 minutes worth of weather delays. Daytona has Tuesday off.

Low A—Clinton 12, Kane County 4

For the second straight game Clinton (21-22, 53-56) used a six-run inning to put away Kane County (14-28, 44-63)

At the Plate: Jeimer Candelario (.253/.338/.388) gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the first with his 8th homer of the season, his fifth since July 2. The Cougars only managed three more hits the rest of the game. Carlos Escobar (.243/.281/.317) ripped a RBI double in the ninth and scored on a wild pitch. The Cougars other run came on a bad throw on a pickoff attempt.

On the Mound: Felix Pena (4-4 4.00 ERA) got rocked for for 10 hits and eight runs as the right-hander allowed two homers. Nathan Dorris (6-3 3.42) couldn't get the Cougars out of the sixth after the first two hitters reached against Pena, and by the time the third out was recorded Clinton had scored six times. Dorris finished the night with a line of 2IP, 3H, 4ER, 3BB, 1K.

Cougars Notes: Albert Almora (.329/.376/.466) didn't play Monday night after leaving yesterday's game with an apparent lower back injury. Daniel Vogelbach (.283/.360/.450) got the day off.

Short-Season—Boise

Boise started their three-day break for the NWL all-star game, Aug. 6 in Everett. Will have a story on the eight Boise players named to all-star game on Tuesday—David Bote, Shawon Dunston, Lance Rymel, James Pugliese, Tyler Bremer, Carlos Penalver, Yasiel Balaguert, Jacob Rogers

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 4, Indians 3

The Cubs (18-19) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Indians (17-19).

At the Plate: The Cubs took the lead in the 7th when Kelvin Freeman (.293/.366/.341) ripped a two-run single to tie the game scoring Jeffrey Baez (.263/.349/.342) and Jesse Hodges (.226/.291/.311). Francisco Sanchez (.221/.243/.404) then delivered the game winner with a two-out double to give the Cubs the lead. Garrett Schlecht (.200/.255/.280) had a RBI single in the fourth and Charcer Burks (.273/.333/.291) added two hits.

On the Mound: Gerardo Concepcion (0-0 0.00 ERA) had some command issues Monday night walking four (three wild pitches) in just 1.2 innings although he didn't allow a hit. He was charged with one unearned run and fanned one in his second appearance in 2013. Juan Francisco (0-1 7.27) tossed 1.1 frames with a hit, a walk and strikeout. Carlos Rodriguez (0-4 8.71) threw two shutout innings but Josh Davis (3-0 1.80) surrendered two runs in his 1.2 innings with three strikeouts. Tyler Ihrig (2-0 0.79) recorded his second win of Th. AZL pitching shutout ball for 1.1 frames. Brad Renner, the Cubs 28th round pick, made his professional debut and got the final three outs for the save in his debut. The right-hander fanned one and retired all three hitters he faced.

Dominican Summer League—Cubs 12, Mets I 5

Cubs (37-17) pounded out 13 hits to beat the Mets (18-36) in a game shortened to eight innings due to rain.

At the Plate: Shamil Ubiera continues to terrorize DSL pitching (.404 in last 10 games) as the right-handed hitting outfielder went 3-5 with two doubles and four RBI. Varonex Cuevas (.295), Adonis Paula (.281) and Luis Acosta (.140) all had two hits. Jenner Emeterio (.401 OBP) knocked in a pair and swiped two bases to run his season total to 28.

On the Mound: Carlos Llano (5-1 3.19) went the first four innings allowing three runs on seven hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Pedro Araujo (3-0) got the win in relief fanning six in three innings surrendering two runs on four hits.

Cubs Notes: With 17 games remaining in the season, the Cubs hold a 5.5 game lead over the Cardinals and Yankees 1. The Cubs have the second best record in the 35-team DSL as the Rangers are four games better.

Venezuelan Summer League—Mariners 9, Cubs 8

The Mariners (48-20) beat the Cubs (36-32) in the final game of the VSL regular season. The two teams will now square off in a three-game playoff for the league championship.

At the Plate: C Roberto Vahlis was 3-5 with 2 RBI while Victor Gomez knocked in two runs on two hits. Bryant Flete finished with two hits and a RBI.

On the Mound: The Cubs led 8-6 after seven innings but the M's scored three times in the final two at-bats. Brohiglyn Rivero (0-1 30.24 ERA) took the loss giving up all three runs. Cubs pitching surrendered 11 hits and six walks.

Cubs Notes: The Mariners and Cubs begin their best-of-three playoff series for the VSL championship on Aug. 6-7-8.
