Gault's Senior Notebook - Week Four

In a new feature to BadgerNation, Monona Grove senior lineman and Wisconsin commit Jaden Gault - the highest-ranked player in the state for the Class of 2014 - will take us through each game of his senior season, telling us what worked, what didn't and where improvement is needed. This week he recaps another blowout and updates us on his knee injury.

What happened

Monona Grove defeated Monroe, 39-0, to move to 4-0 and 2-0 in the Badger North. For the second-straight week, however, Jaden Gault did not play because of a knee injury.

Opening thoughts

Monroe is a physical team. They played Waunakee, Deforest and Mount Horeb, a lot of good upper-area teams. We were expecting them to come at us and bring their physicality. We played mature out there and made sure to hit them right away. Defensively we were able to control them and I thought our linebackers played a pretty good game. Offensively they tried to load the box, but we were able to pass right away to get some positive yards.

What did Monona Grove do well as a team?

I just thought we were able to pick up blocks for the most parts, and that's something we worked on in practice. We did do things the correct way, as we didn't have any holding calls. I thought we did that really well and that was a positive for me.

Where are you at individually with your knee?

I thought I was ready to go for Monroe, but Wednesday or Thursday I started doing some running and it swelled up again. I went to the doctors to try to get cleared for Friday and he wouldn't clear me because the knee cap was still susceptible to injury. A couple coaches were trying to get me to play so I was pretty frustrated with that, but I've had the whole weekend to rest and have a whole week to prepare for Madison Edgewood.

I'll take it easy with jogging and work with my trainers, but I think I should be ready to go. If I could be out there I would have been out there, but the doctors weren't going to let me. I think I am 90 percent to play. Right now is how I felt last week, but the swelling has gone down. We'll see how it goes.

What do you need to do better going into next week's game?

We need to be more consistent getting first downs. There were times where we move the ball really well and other times where we can't complete a pass. I thought we were pretty good Friday, but we need to do a better job with opponents load the box. Our coaches have the same philosophy as Coach Andersen and that's "Players make plays." We need to make sure we take each play and make sure we are sharp.

Playing a 3-1 Edgewood team this week, how will they challenge you as an offense?

They are really quick. A bunch of us went to the Waunakee game and watched them play, and they are obviously a really good team. They are good defensively, giving up 19 points in the last two games. They are going to play tough so we will need to be able to match that.
