On a first date, it's never good to talk about yourself. Apparently, the same goes for recruiting, as on Saturday, the California basketball program talked more about its guest – Hayward (Calif.) Moreau Catholic small forward Oscar Frayer -- than about itself, and it started with former five-star Jabari Bird.
"We really didn't even talk about Cal," said Frayer, who plays for Bird's former AAU team, the Oakland Soldiers. "He said he chose Cal because of the fan support, honestly."
The same went for the coaching staff, which saw Frayer at the Bears' team camp back in June.
"We really didn't talk about Cal. We talked about life. It was kind of just getting to know me, and what I need to work on," Frayer said. "They said they'd like to see me go left more, and they'd like to see me play with a higher motor, more energy."
The low-pressure environment really played to the low-key Frayer, a four-star prospect for the class of 2016, and the No. 6 small forward in that class.
"It made me feel a lot like I'm at home," said Frayer.
That sense of home was magnified by the fact that Frayer's freshman teammate -- Damari Milstead -- also made the trip out, and the pair played a bit of pick-up basketball with some of the younger players during the course of their visit.
"We got there and watched Jabari Bird play and work out, and then we actually got into a workout ourselves, up there, with the commit [Ahmaad Rorie], and then we went out to eat and then went to the football game," Frayer said. "It was really fun. It was really interesting. The people at Cal are really interesting. I love their fan support. They're just a real fun school to be at."
How did Frayer do against his collegiate counterparts?
"I felt like I did OK, for playing with college players and being only a sophomore," he laughed.
Last week, the Bears and San Francisco paid a visit to open gym workouts at Moreau Catholic, and next week, St. Mary's will come calling to watch Frayer and Milstead, who start official practices in October.
Frayer said that he'd grade his unofficial to Berkeley "a definite ‘A'."
