The Answer

Question: Can you name the highest paid retired athlete?

Can you believe that Michael Jordan earned 90 million dollars in endorsements last year alone? Much of that is still through Nike and the entire line of Air Jordan shoes and apparel. Gatorade, Hanes, Upper Deck, Five Star Fragrances, 2K Sports and Novant Health all have Jordan as a sponsor. He also owns 80% of the Charlotte Bobcats.

His brand, though, is still incredible. Just last year alone there was only one athlete that made more than Jordan between salary and endorsements, and that was boxer Floyd Mayweather ($105 million). He is the first athlete to earn figures north of 100 million since Tiger Woods.

Jordan earned more than a couple of soccer stars in Cristiano Ronaldo ($80 million) and Lionel Messi ($64.7 million) and a pair of basketball icons in LeBron James ($72.3 million) and Kobe Bryant ($61.5 million).

Jordan signed a five-year deal with Nike for $500,000 as a rookie in the NBA 30 years ago, and the rest is history. The Nike Jordan Brand grew their sales to 2.7 billion last year, and Michael Jordan still gets his share to this day.

Forbes believes Jordan’s net worth is $750 million, and he's closing on a billion quickly.
