Schottenheimer Fired by Redskins

Marty Schottenheimer has been officially fired. Marty got to spend one season with the Washington Redskins, and he gave it his best effort. Even owner Daniel Snyder was quoted as saying "Coach Schottenheimer gave 100% of his effort to the Redskins and made positive contributions to the team. Our decision was a difficult one and was based on philosophical management issues, not on coaching ability. We wish Marty all the best in his future coaching endeavors. "

ASHBURN, Va. - The Washington Redskins announced today that Marty Schottenheimer has been released from his position as Director of Football Operations and Head Coach.

Is this a sad day in the history of one of the most tradition filled teams in the NFL? Or is it a glorious day? I guess that all depends on who you are talking to.
Is there a trend starting to form in Washington? 3 head coaches in 2 seasons tend to make fans and players feel very uneasy.

The Redskins stated that the Club has concluded it is in the best interests of the team to hire an experienced professional to oversee non-coaching player personnel matters.

According to the Redskins, Coach Schottenheimer was offered a number of opportunities to modify his contract in order to change responsibility for non-coaching player personnel matters. Schottenheimer's contract would have remained the same except for control over final decisions in the event of disagreement in player personnel matters.

Owner Daniel Snyder was quoted as saying "The head coach position is a very demanding, year-round job. It is very difficult for one individual to successfully perform the head coach duties while maintaining responsibility for scouting and player personnel functions, including salary cap management, agent/player negotiation, analysis of college and professional players, recommendations for trades, draft picks and free agent selections."

So you can probably imagine Redskins fans all over the world are wondering the same thing, who will be the Head Coach of the Redskins in 2002?

Sure looks a lot like former Florida coach Steve Spurrier. We understand Spurrier will take the position at 5 million a year for 5 years. Look for an official announcement over the next 4 days.

I wouldn't waste any time feeling sorry for Marty Schottenheimer either, Over the next three years, the Washington Redskins will pay Coach Schottenheimer his $7.5 million salary under the terms of his contract.
