The game showcased two great pitchers, but in the end Finch’s workload proved to be too much. The night before Finch threw 196 pitches and she struggled the entire championship game. Finch worked out of a number of jams but couldn’t overcome an unusually high number of walks. The normally accurate Finch walked a season high eight batters, including three in the seventh. The Wildcats got two quick outs to start the seventh, but then a walk and two singles put the Bears up 1-0. After that the floodgates opened. Finch intentionally walked Veronica Nelson, but then lost the next batter and walked in the game’s second run. A single and two doubles to the wall allowed the Bears to plate four more runs. The Wildcats never found an answer for Cal’s Jocelyn Forrest. Forrest, still grieving the death of her sister, was sharp in her 10th consecutive ways. He rise ball and change-up kept the Cats guessing all game. The Wildcats were held to a lone hit and despite putting runners on, they could never get one to cross the plate.
Finch leaves as the Wildcats’ second winningest pitcher and the school’s all-time strikeout leader. Finch was nails the entire tournament, pitching two shutouts and going 11 innings in the 6-2 win over Florida State.
