'92 Bama Defense Too Much for '98 Vols

Posted Jun 13, 2006

In a matchup of classic championship SEC teams, the 1998 Volunteers failed to capitalize on a stellar effort from RB Travis Henry as the 1992 Crimson Tide came out victorious. The '92 Bama defense stole the show in the victory.

The key play of the game was undoubtedly David Palmer’s 59 yard punt return just as the first half was about to conclude. Coupled with Derrick Lassic’s score with less than two minutes remaining the Tide had enough scoring to hold up against Tennessee.

Tennessee’s Travis Henry provided one of their few bright spots, rushing 34 times for 172 yards, including a 55 yard TD run in the first quarter. Otherwise, the Vols offense never got on track, QB Tee Martin finishing a miserable 14 of 29 for just 116 yards.

Derrick Lassic led the Tide in receiving, snaring 6 catches for 88 yards and a long of 41 yards. ‘Bama QB Jay Barker was solid if not spectacular, completing 18 of 26 passes for 228 yards. Lassic was named the player of the game, but mention should also be made of the Tide’s pass defense.

The 'Bama defense held Tennessee to just 83 pass yards and Tee Martin never was comfortable as Alabama’s defense harassed him all game long. Martin was sacked 5 times and was hurried into poor passes all game long.

The '92 Bama squad is in for a huge test when they meet the '96 Florida Gators in the quarterfinals of the Scout.com/WhatIfSports.com Tournament of Champions.
