Friday's game against Illinois was the final time the senior members of the 2009 University of Cincinnati football team took to the Nippert Stadium turf. We take a short look back at each of them and now look at Mardy Gilyard.

Mardy Gilyard – Bunnell (FL) Flagler-Palm Coast

Class of 2005

Many now know the story of Mardy Gilyard during his career at the University of Cincinnati. Known early as Marshawn Gilyard who was a high school running back and soon to be college defensive back before his name changed along with his game.

The road traveled by Gilyard will be part of Bearcats lore and one that should be studied by many of student-athletes who feel they can get by just being an athlete.

Much like Curtis Young, Mardy let things get away from him and loss his scholarship before seeing the light and working himself back into the good graces of the university and the coaching staff.

I often wonder what would have happen if Brian Kelly had not been named head coach and Mardy would have never returned to the program. Kelly showed him the way and Mardy did the work and the rest will be part of Bearcats history.

A showman, Mardy proved again on Friday he knows how to rise to the occasion and bring a fan base to their feet.

The first thing I remember about Mardy is his style of speech and the self confidence and swagger that would serve him well during his Bearcats career. Always a fast talker, Mardy was good for a quote and talked about playing in snow after he became a member of the Bearcats.

Records are meant to be broken but people for years will remember some of the key plays Mardy made during his Bearcats career.

Blessed with a lot of God given talent I hope Mardy continues to work hard and reaches his full potential at the next level and not get sidetracked.

Mardy, you’ve been fun to cover and you always made an interview exciting. Good Luck in the future on and off the field.
