McKinney resigns

CUTigers.com has learned Clemson women's basketball head coach Christy McKinney has resigned.

Multiple sources confirmed to CUTigers.com moments ago that Clemson women's head basketball coach Christy McKinney has resigned her position, effective immediately.

The move came in a meeting with Clemson athletics director Terry Don Phillips earlier Wednesday.

McKinney finishes five seasons at Clemson with a 58-93 record overall.

She came to Clemson from Rice University and has compiled an overall record of 275-232 in 17 seasons as a Division I basketball coach.

Clemson finished the 2009-10 season 13-17 and 4-10 in the ACC. The Lady Tigers were eliminated in the ACC Tournament last week by N.C. State.

"I would like to thank Clemson University for the opportunity to coach at such a fine institution in such a great athletic department,” said McKinney. “I'd also like to thank all of the people who supported me during my time at Clemson.

“At this time, I believe a change is needed for me and Clemson University. I'd like to wish Clemson University and Lady Tiger Basketball all the best going forward."

McKinney replaced former head coach Jim Davis, who resigned his position on March 19, 2005. Davis left as the winningest basketball coach in Clemson history, men or women, finishing with a career record of 355-197.

“I greatly appreciate Cristy McKinney’s hard work and dedication to Clemson University and this athletic department the last five years,” said Terry Don Phillips. “She is an outstanding professional who always had her student-athletes well being at the forefront.

“We will begin our search for a new coach immediately.”
