Fountain Hills starts the year 2-0 with a 26-0 win over Estrella Foothills on the Cox 7 Thursday game of the week.
Breakdown
Two traditional 3A powers went head to head on Cox 7's Thursday game of the week. Fountain Hills was trying to go 2-0 after making the semi-finals last year while Estrella Foothills and new head coach Lamar Early were trying to avoid going 0-2.
The ball bounced FH's way early and the Falcons never looked back, rolling to a 26-0 lead.
Fountain Hills got the ball first and took control of the game. QB Rainer Greenstreet hooked up with Nathan Shooks for a big gain that gave them the ball at midfield and later found TE Mike Degroote that gave them the ball inside the 20. One play later RB Trace Johnson raced in for a 6-0 lead after the PAT was missed.
Estrella Foothills' first series didn't quite go the same way. QB Brimonte Brown was intercepted by Ty Blunt and Blunt took it to the house. 12-0 lead after another missed PAT.
This was the score headed into the half.
Fountain Hills added two more scores, one each in both the 3rd and 4th quarters, to win the game 26-0.
FH defensive back Jamus Hernandez picked Brown and Greenstreet went to town. He found Degroote for a 50 yard TD and hooked up with Degroote on the 2-point conversion. 20-0.
With a few ticks left on the clock, Fountain Hills' Zach Rossfeld added a final score.
26-0
Bottomline
Fountain Hills played tough defense while Estrella Foothills committed way too many penalties to beat a team like FH. If there was a weakness, Fountain Hills struggled in the kicking game, missing 2 PATs and 2 FGs.
