Not Waiting?

"I don't plan on waiting for LSU," Ricky Johnson said. "I think they are waiting to see what some other receivers do before they offer me." Johnson now names Arkansas and Georgia Tech as his leaders even though he hasn't actually visited either campus. "I'm going to visit both of them over Labor Day weekend. I'd like to make my decision in early September, so it'll be after I visit those..."

Ricky Johnson, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound three-star athlete (wide receiver, running back and quarterback) from Carencro High School in Lafayette, La., has narrowed down his list to three choices, but says it's basically between two schools - Arkansas and Georgia Tech. His third favorite is LSU, which has lost some ground because Les Miles hasn't offered yet.

"I don't plan on waiting for LSU," Johnson said. "I think they are waiting to see what some other receivers do before they offer me."

Johnson attended the LSU in July and thinks he deserves an offer. "The camp went real good," he said. "I went there as a wide receiver and ran a 4.38 forty yard dash, but they said they want me as a cornerback. I really want to play wide receiver or quarterback in college and think I did good enough to get offered."

Even though Johnson may not have an offer from LSU, he says he plans on attending their games against Alabama on Nov. 8, Georgia on Oct. 25 and perhaps even their opener against Appalachian State on Aug. 30.

"LSU is only like 30 minutes away and I always go to a bunch of their games," he said. "I think this year will be a rebuilding year for them though. I don't think they'll win the national championship, especially without (quarterback) Ryan Perrilloux."

So if he doesn't believe the Tigers can repeat as champions, who does he think will win? "It'll be either Florida or Georgia," Johnson said.

Johnson now names Arkansas and Georgia Tech as his favorites even though he hasn't actually visited either campus. "I'm going to visit both of them over Labor Day weekend," he said. "I'd like to make my decision in early September, so it'll be after I visit those two schools."

He says that Georgia Tech is recruiting him the hardest. "They sent me a lot of mail and they always email me," Johnson said. "They also said that I'd be able to play both football and basketball there."

Johnson plays point guard and averages 18 points, six rebounds and six assists per game. "If I go to an SEC school, I'll only focus on football," he said. "But if I go to an ACC school, I'll try and do both."

One thing that the Ramblin' Wreck have going for them is their new triple option offense under coach Paul Johnson. "I really like that they are going to be running the triple option," he said. "We run that at my high school too and they are saying I could play receiver or quarterback.

"I've also heard that it's a really fun environment," he said. "I guess it's in Atlanta and there's a lot to do there.

"I don't really know much about the area of Arkansas," Johnson admitted. "But I'm excited to see their new wildcat package. They told me that they would try and get me the ball in multiple ways and I like that. I think they'll have a good season and will just get better and better."

Carencro High School opens their season on Sept. 5 against McKinley High School in Baton Rouge, La.

Johnson reports a 3.4 core GPA and a 17 ACT, which he will retake.
