The passing of Muhammad Ali and his importance on today's athlete: While We're Waiting...

Will the passing of Muhammad Ali, and the praise he has received in memoriam, lead more athletes to use their platform for the greater good?

Every time a player from the NBA Finals took to the podium this weekend, asked about the passing of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, there was a mention (or reference to) a platform. Stephen Curry mentioned Ali and how he was a trailblazer for athletes to use their status in the world to speak on what they stand for. LeBron James, arguably the biggest activist in professional sports, said that he would not be able to have his place in the world if not for Ali. Perhaps the best part about James' thoughts on The Greatest was that he learned of Ali's out-of-ring life, seemingly studying the legend as he was gaining his foothold in the modern world.

We've talked a lot over the years regarding the "STICK TO SPORTS!" crowd and how absurd that mantra is, but with the passing of Ali, the world lost the man who spearheaded the movement up until his final days. If there were a Mount Rushmore of professional athletes turned activists, it'd be Ali's head four times over. Perhaps we could have different generations or ages, to serve as a timeline of sorts, but the point remains.

There have been plenty of athletes who have actively chosen not to use their platform for anything of substance. Michael Jordan famously told a friend that "Republicans by shoes too" when asked why he wouldn’t endorse a black Democratic candidate, Harvey Gantt, in a 1990 North Carolina Senate race against Republican Jesse Helms. Every time a racial or social news item hits headlines, the biggest athletes in the world are oftentimes asked to weigh in, but many choose not to.

It hasn't been until recently where folks like Andrew Hawkins (wearing his "I Can't Breathe" t-shirt during Browns introductions) have decided to step up the use of their voice. Thankfully, James has long been a proponent of sending messages, whether it was wearing a similar shirt or having his Miami Heat teammates don hoodies in the wake of the Travon Martin homicide. Sure, he was the subject of a recent piece in ESPN The Magazine claiming he wasn't doing enough, but when hasn't that been a part of the narrative? (Dude gets roasted every time he isn't perfect.) He's the only player in recent memory who fans wanted to not play as a form of social protest.

http://www.scout.com/cleveland-sports/story/1675654-don-king-muhammad-al... Much of the praise and adoration directed at Ali came well after the legend's time in the ring. Jim Brown said that people only began to hear Ali once he he could no longer speak. When Muhammad Ali was in his prime, there was a faction of folks who saw a bombastic and cocky kid who needed to show some humility. That he never once considered changing his tune in light of these criticisms made him who he was, and who he will always live on to be.

While many have had a tough road to get to where they are, today's athletes do not have to deal with a fraction of the social and racial divides that were prevalent in the 70s. Here's hoping that more athletes see the outcome of Ali's workhis sacrifice, his standing up for what he believed—and follow suit, using their platform for more than boilerplate rhetoric and robotic filler.

We'll chalk this up as one of those media-type things that doesn't necessarily impact the average fan, but for those who closely follow the UFC, you have heard about Ariel Helwani. For those of you who do not follow MMA, Helwani is equivalent to FOX's Jay Glazer or Yahoo!'s Adrian Wojnarowski—a well-sourced, give-no-shits reporter who cares little about public relations and everything about getting stories right and in front of readers before any of the compeition.

On Saturday night, it was Helwani who broke the news of Brock Lesner returning for at least one fight, a fight that will take place at UFC 200. Huge news, news that shook the MMA world (and WWE world, to a point). News that was broken before Dana White's UFC released the news on their own. News that ultimately had Helwani escorted out of the building during the middle of a pay-per-view event, having his credentials indefinitely revoked.

To recap: Helwani reported a story. It was accurate and the information wasn't obtained unethically. When I was interviewing Jessica Eye for a story I wrote a few years back, Helwani was blowing up her manager's phone as he smelled news from a few thousand miles away. He's the quintessential reporter, yet here is Dana White looking like a petulant child that his little in-arena video was scooped by an individual whose job it is to report these stories once verified. White's UFC has been the subject of ire regarding their treatment of media for some time now, but this story immediately pushes all other run-ins to the background. Worse, when asked about the situation, UFC's VP of Public Relations would not comment.

Earlier this year, White infamously called Helwani out on Twitter over a report that ended up being proven true. It's also rumored that it was White who had Helwani fired from FOX due to the partnership with UFC (akin to local radio stations partnering with a football team then no longer being able to report on specific items).

The fallout of this is yet to be seen as the embers are still very, very hot. As Awful Announcing said best, If White wants to be taken seriously, he will need to accept the possibility that reporters who aren’t under their collective thumb will break news about the company. Had Helwani waited for the announcement, his job morphs from reporter to PR assistant. Think Glazer or Woj would accept these types of restrictions?

As the media world is wont to do when a legend passes, we were all graced with some of the best writing from some of the best writers on a man who was unarguably the best at his craft during his time. There's no time for hot takes when you have the latest edition of #ActualSportswriting:

"A child of contradiction, Muhammad Ali was an essential American" by Charles P. Pierce (Sports Illustrated): "As an athlete, and purely as an athlete, he was as revolutionary as anyone who ever lived—a big man with fire in his hands and lightning in his feet. He lost what likely were the best years of his athletic life and when he came back, thicker and tougher, he came back to a heavyweight division that was loaded with power and talent." 1

"The Outsized Life of Muhammad Ali" by David Remnick (The New Yorker): "The only thing ordinary about the boxing career of Muhammad Ali was that he stayed too long and ended up damaged. Everything else was outsized: the upset victory in 1964, to win the title from Sonny Liston ('I’m King of the World!' he shouted to the reporters at ringside), the friendship (and falling out) with Malcolm X, the embrace of the Nation of Islam, the blaze of brilliant fights in the mid-sixties, then the draft, the acceptance of a potential jail term, the stripping of his title, the years in exile." 2

"How Muhammad Ali woke up sportswriters" by Bryan Curtis (The Ringer): "A sportswriter celebrates an athlete, criticizes an athlete, or lifts his hood for inspection. Here, the athlete transformed the sportswriters, reaching through the ring ropes and lifting them off press row. By 1999, when The Best American Sports Writing of the Century was published, it had a whole section devoted to 'The One and Only.'" 3

"Why they called him The Greatest and why I called him my friend" by Jerry Izenberg (NJ.com): "The people. With Muhammad Ali, it was always the people. It didn't matter whether they were rich or poor, black or white, celebrity-famous, blue-collar weary or welfare poor. It didn't matter what language they spoke, what God they worshiped, what gender they were. Well, in this last group I'd have to say that the ladies had a little edge." 4

And finally, because it's been a while and we all could use something to laugh at, here's the latest from John Oliver:

1 Pierce is one of the few Drop What You're Doing And Read This writers out there. That he took on the topic of Ali for SI (and not Esquire) is a bit of a surprise, but let's be honest—it's not the outlet as much as it is the words being penned. This piece was terrific.

2 I'm a fan of the vast majority of things written at The New Yorker. When you factor in that this obituary was written not only about a sports legend but by The New Yorker's editor who wrote King of the World makes it all the better.

3 Will already touched on The Ringer in his WWW column last week, but as someone who appreciates quality work, I couldn't be more excited that we have more at our disposal. Loved Curtis' work at Grantland; looking forward to more here.

4 I had previously been unaware of this friendship, so reading this story was a bit of a journey. As you all know, I'm a huge fan of essays, and one of this magnitude is all the better.
