A city in celebration and a paint company that doesn't quite get it: While We're Waiting...

The city of Cleveland is still floating in celebration of the first major championship in 52 years, yet Sherwin-Williams wants you to think of *them* for the rest of the summer.

It's hard to believe that the Cleveland Cavaliers' Game 7 victory over the Golden State Warriors was just a week ago. Can one event simultaneously feel like it occurred yesterday and yesteryear? Such is the case with this incredible and emotional feat where a basketball team, led by LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, managed to re-write history. No, those pain points still stand, but what the Cavs did allowed them to not only be less painful, but insignificant.

It's hard to believe that a week ago from this publication, the Cavs were en route to the IX Center, having spent the night in Las Vegas to soak in their gigantic victory, where thousands of fans—many of whom had been awake into the early hours of the morning in celebration—waited for hours just for the opportunity to show their appreciation for the dedication and drive and unwillingness to give up in the face of odds that had never been longer. The starting five, including a shirtless J.R. Smith, would greet all in attendance from the stairs to the tarmac. LeBron James would take the Larry O'Brien trophy and run along the length of the barricade that was keeping fans on their side, that bright gold trophy shining in the mid-day sun. It was unstructured and impromptu and perfect.

It's hard to believe that it was just a few short days ago when 1.3 million fans filled the streets of Cleveland in celebration. That this much humanity in such a confined space could not only fill the route which was to be used for the parade, but behave in such a way that was celebrated nationally.  A moment that could have gone horribly wrong based on shear numbers alone wound up being praised by any and everyone. Here's the Cleveland Police's letter to the city if you missed it.

https://twitter.com/TenCentBeers/status/746047817349640192

https://twitter.com/cshillz/status/746061805613625344

And it's hard to believe that Sherwin-Williams, an institution in the city of Cleveland, could be blind to all of this as they gear up to remove the iconic CLEVELAND LeBron James banner that is housed on the side of their building for the remainder of the summer. A bad idea before the Cavaliers won the championship became exponentially more so following last Sunday's events, but the Cleveland-based paint company is not changing its tune in advance of July's Republican National Convention.

https://twitter.com/SherwinWilliams/status/745390361103609856

Here's what we don't know:

  • What agreements were in place for the banner in advance of this decision. Don't forget, the RNC was granted to Cleveland days before James' decision to return; months before Nike hung the banner that is now in place—the one that had "Champions" lasered into it minutes after the final buzzer.
  • Whether or not Nike even wants to be in the background of any sort of RNC activities. One would think the exposure would be good, but you never know with politics and what not.

And here's what we do know:

  • That Sherwin-Williams owns the building and has all the right in the world to hang whatever they wish on their premises.
  • That Sherwin-Williams has an obligation to shareholders and any nation-wide (or even global) marketing could stand to benefit those who have vested interest.
  • This is a horrible, horrible idea from a city-wide public relations standpoint. Look at the image above. How different (i.e. less iconic) would it have been had a giant Sherwin-Williams logo been hanging in the background.
  • That this idea, whenever it was hatched, should have been immediately shot down by someone—anyone—with a remote grasp of how important the Cavaliers' win means to the entire city.
  • That the idea to "welcome summer visitors" is one of the most disingenuous lines ever written in a press release. No one—literally, no one—will be coming to Cleveland and stopping by a Sherwin-Williams banner for a photo opportunity, limiting all exposure to real-time eyeballs who have no choice but to glance up and a monstrosity that signifies nothing but corporate bravado and civic dishonesty.

Scott Raab discussed it in the latest WFNY podcast, but the Cavaliers winning the first title was very important in the way that a fractured city was able to come together and provide one of the largest, most diverse cross-sections of fandom that major sports has ever seen. For a company that would stand to benefit from all of the positive PR tied to leaving the James banner up being willing to put itself ahead of its potential customers is bizarre at best, likely falling somewhere near misguided on the entire spectrum of decision-making.

If you clicked on the link in the above-referenced tweet, you'll find a press release (gross) penned by a man named Mike Conway which states the banner will not only come down for the Republican National Convention, but will remain up for the subsequent 85 days, meaning that the LeBron Banner will be up for approximately two weeks over the entire summer following the team's history-making championship. But don't worry! They refer to the current banner as "iconic" and urge everyone to come down to Cleveland and get their pictures taken before it's too late!

There is full understanding that the RNC will provide the city of Cleveland and any companies within it to have exposure on a national level. A 150th anniversary is something to be proud of, especially considering all of the other companies who took their ball and went elsewhere—looking at you, Eaton. But with all of this fully known, the decision to remove something that now signifies even more than it did two years ago when James penned his essay about returning home—well, it just speaks to how blind and deaf corporate decision-making can truly be, especially when it comes to the city it calls home.

Just because one has the right to do something doesn't mean they should. Sherwin-Williams had an opportunity to celebrate with the city of Cleveland. Instead, they're opting to take it over.

While the NBA Draft didn't exactly pull the best ratings in Cleveland—what with all the week-long celebrating—it was awesome to see that Yahoo! Sports' The Vertical's web show pulled 3.7 million viewers over the course of the evening. While it would be tougher to pull off for a multi-day NFL Draft, what Adrian Wojnarowski and team proved is fans want information at the ready; not when ESPN or some other network feels it is OK to share it.

From Awful Announcing:

Yahoo spokesperson told Awful Announcing Friday the almost-four-hour stream drew 3.7 million total video views, reached more than 2.8 million unique viewers across all devices, and averaged 34 minutes of watch time per user, saying “We’re very happy with the numbers and how it came out. Everything went great with Woj doing his thing and breaking news in real time. …Consumers really enjoyed the experience that we put out there. It’s kind of something new that has never been done before, so it was a fun experiment for us.”

By contrast, ESPN’s draft coverage averaged 2.994 million viewers. Yahoo’s number is a total rather than an average, but it’s substantial that a web show got this many views, and that’s probably part of why ESPN posted its worst draft rating since 2012. Wojnarowski told AA The Vertical’s numbers are as big as they are because of the work that went into providing a top-quality product.

I've been underwhelmed by The Vertical as a standalone thus far (I mean, they litereally just launched their own URL). Wojnarowski's podcast has been a value-add, and the additions of guys like Chris Mannix and Nick DePaula have been solid, but it wasn't until this web stream and the proof of concept where info-now is better than info-later, where The Vertical really dominated the competition. Woj owned the draft, just as he has for many years—this time, in a form much more engaging than Twitter.

Here's SI's Richard Deitsch on the matter:

The Vertical offered a blueprint on how to pick off some audience from a broadcast rights-holder for events such as a draft or free agency coverage, or quite frankly anything that’s not a live sporting event. And they did it through reporting, breaking news ahead of ESPN’s coverage, and analysts who were steeped in scouting rather than a Dick Vitale or Stephen A. Smith-esque screed about why Player X will be a bust.

As someone who will take reporting and hard work over pomp and circumstance any day of the week, count me in as someone looking forward to what the future holds for this outlet.

I've long taken heat for warming up to the [air quote] "locker room guys" across the three major teams in Cleveland. The narrative states that for a player to have a voice in the locker room, they have to contribute on the floor. They lead by filling up the box score, or some nonsense like that.

My current player of interest, as he has been for the last two years, is Cavs swingman James Jones. And thanks to Kevin Love, fans get to see just what Jones has meant to this Cavaliers team when the cameras aren't on.

You taught me more than you know the past 2 years— what it takes to win, how to be a better teammate, how to balance the good/bad off the court, and most importantly...putting team first. Sacrifice for the better of the team, and in order to lead sometimes you have to learn to follow. You’ve been to 6 straight Finals. You’ve been the constant presence we needed in the locker room. You’re the ultimate work horse. The lessons you taught me will stay with me for the rest of my career and life after basketball. No one can avoid the ups and downs of the Playoffs, and when many wrote me off after a tough stretch in the Finals… you and the team stuck by me allowing me to flourish and make plays when it mattered most. Like you told me not too long ago, “don’t be afraid to be yourself.” And now I’ll never be— thanks for everything. Keep being you Champ.

Jones coaches. Jones teaches. Jones is the quiet kid in the classroom, soaking in everything around him just so he can get all of the information before he tells you what he thinks.

If you may recall, it was Jones who Love sat next to on the team's trip to Brazil last summer, hoping to learn the ways off the court. So yeah—the next time you think guys like Jones or Jason Giambi are just wasting a roster space, you may want to think about all the things you don't see.

Much like The Vertical taking eyes and ears away from the hot take machine, here's this week's #ActualSportswriting:

"J.R. Smith is shirtless and everyone is crying" by Sean Gentille (Sporting News): "Some of those photos were taken from the tops of port-a-potties. It wasn’t until after 12:30, when LeBron rolled past, that we appreciated the day’s sheer scale... Fan dedication is perching yourself atop a crumpled heap of plastic, feet away from falling into a brew of chemicals and human waste, all in the name of watching a confetti cannon." 1

"Black Skin Matters" by Clinton Yates (The Undefeated): "Let’s be clear about the impact it had on many young black men across America. The statement was obvious: My skin is not a threat. This might strike some people as a revelation, or even inflammatory. But think about how empowered one must feel in order to show themselves off in such a way. It’s a privilege that few can enjoy safely. Ask any woman." 2

"As the Olympis near, Brazil and Rio let the bad times roll" by Joe Nocera (NY Times): "The Games begin in six weeks, but nobody is partying anymore. The economic — and social, and political — conditions facing Brazil and Rio have changed drastically. A huge corruption scandal that began at the country’s giant oil company, Petrobras, resulted in exposés and investigations into dozens, if not hundreds, of high-ranking politicians and members of the business elite... The country’s economy has also fallen off a cliff, its gross domestic product dropping by 3.8 percent last year alone." 3

"At home in Latvia with the future of the New York Knicks" by Jack Holmes (Esquire): "It never seemed personal for him: people over here just didn't know him, didn't know what he could do. The only solution was to show them. He didn't waste much time, scoring 16 points in his NBA debut against the Milwaukee Bucks. By his fourth appearance, against the dynastic San Antonio Spurs, he had his first double-double. The kid who Fran Fraschilla, ESPN's most optimistic analyst, had said would take years to come good won Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month to start the season, then added the next three in a row through January." 4

I can't get over how terrified Adam Schefter is of all things politics while Bomani Jones and Jemele Hill, who work for the same employer, embrace it across the board.
