Cleveland Browns: Are Changes Ahead for the Tight End Position?

Could the Browns move on from Gary Barnidge?.

Heading into an offseason locked and loaded with more draft capital and salary cap space than any team in the league, the Cleveland Browns front office has an opportunity to make major strides in upgrading their roster in year two of the Hue Jackson era.

Sashi Brown and company wasted no time getting to work, as they re-signed one of their own to keep him off the open market. That player, of course, was linebacker Jamie Collins. He received a four-year, $50 million deal with $26 million guaranteed after being acquired from the New England Patriots in late October for a third-round compensatory pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. At the time, many did not understand why Cleveland would want to acquire him since he was set to be an unrestricted free agent, but the front office was confident they could keep make a major pitch to the 27-year old as the centerpiece of their defense for many years to come.

With Collins re-signed, the team turned their focus back to retaining other potential free agents.

The team could not reach a deal with starting running back Isaiah Crowell before free agency began. Instead, they opted to place a second-round tender on the restricted free agent. Placing this tender on Crowell ensured the organization had the right to match any offer another team made to their starting running back, or they could choose to receive a second-round pick from the team that extended him the offer as compensation for letting him leave.

Terrelle Pryor, as we all know, did not receive a franchise tag—as Brown and the front office stayed true to their original plan. Brown was quoted earlier this year in an article on ESPN stating, “Our plan on both of these players (Pryor and Collins) is try to extend them without the use of the tag, and I would leave it at that.” Pryor left for a “prove it” deal in Washington worth $6 million for one season instead of taking a reported four-year deal worth over $32 million from the Browns.

Joel Bitonio was a surprise extension announced during the early days of free agency, as he received a five-year deal worth up to $51 million ($47.5 million base) and $23 million guaranteed. Despite coming off a broken foot injury and Lisfranc surgery in October, the Browns feel the 25-year old left guard is a centerpiece for their line for years to come—which is exactly why they paid him as such.

On the free agent market, the Browns began by beefing up their offensive line, inking guard Kevin Zeitler and center J.C. Tretter.

Zeitler, stolen away from division rival Cincinnati, was a major acquisition. He signed a five-year deal worth $60 million and $31.5 million guaranteed to become the highest paid guard in the league. Tretter, on a much more team friendly deal, will hopefully recover from his knee injury to earn his three-year, $16.75 million deal with $10 million guaranteed as the team’s starting center.

The team also shocked many by paying wide receiver Kenny Britt $32.5 million over four seasons with $17 million guaranteed.

Why is revisiting the major comings and goings of the Cleveland Browns offseason important in an article that is supposed to be talking about the tight end position?

Because as fans get caught up in all of the new players, trades (acquiring a second-round pick to take on Brock Osweiler’s contract) and trade rumors, being mad about Pryor leaving and the 24/7 non-stop draft talk—you may have missed an intriguing development. The Cleveland Browns are quietly looking into tight end options.

Media Reported Tight End Interest

First reported by Field Yates on Twitter:

Bringing in Davis for a visit was quite peculiar, given the fact he really did not do anything during his time with the Jets. According to a Jets blog that cited Pro Football Focus as the source, “Davis ranked 58th in run blocking (38.9 grade) and 32nd in pass blocking (59.6 grade) among all tight ends. For his career, the 31-year old Davis has 53 receptions for 579 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The Browns tight end interest apparently does not stop there.

According to Gil Brandt of NFL.com, the Browns are one of six teams Ashland University tight Adam Shaheen has a private workout set up with. Shaheen, for those of you who do not pay any attention to the draft or Ashland football, has been a riser over the past few months thanks to his size (6’6” and 278 pounds) and ability to be a major pass catching target in the NFL.

A former basketball player who decided to give football and tight end a shot, Shaheen posted 70 catches for 803 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2015. He followed up that campaign with 57 catches for 867 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2016, opting to leave school early for the NFL with one year of remaining eligibility.

Though Davis and Shaheen are not big names by any means, where there is smoke there is usually fire, so the reported interest caused this writer to dig a little deeper into the Browns current roster situation at the tight end position.

Who Plays Tight End for the Cleveland Browns?

The position obviously starts with resident good guy and lover of movies, Gary Barnidge.

After his breakout 2015 Pro Bowl season with 79 catches for 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns, the team’s atrocious quarterback situation in 2016 certainly impacted his performance. In the first year of a brand new three-year contract extension worth $12.3 million ($3.25 million guaranteed), Barnidge finished with 55 receptions for 612 yards and two touchdowns.

As we enter 2017, there are two important things to take note with Barnidge which could be indicators of the Browns sudden interest in the tight end position.

Starting with his age, Barnidge turns 32-years old in September which is likely going to be a concern for an organization focused on adding younger, cheaper talent they can develop. The second is his contract (the “cheap” part). As Spotrac.com has it listed, Barnidge is set to earn $2.75 million in base and a $250,000 roster bonus this year.

His roster spot is more than likely secure for 2017 (unless he is a surprise camp cut with someone else breaking out), but 2018 could spell the end for Barnidge. Coupled with the age issue mentioned above, he is slated to make $3.3 million in base with a $1 million roster bonus for the 2018 season. For a player who will be 33-years old next year, you can probably book it he will not be around when it comes time for the team to pay that $1 million roster bonus.

After Barnidge, there is not much proven game experience or production on the roster.

Former 2015 sixth-round pick Randall Telfer has played just 14 games in two seasons (thanks to an injury), catching two passes for four yards. Coming out of USC, he was known as a “dedicated run blocker who is willing to scrap it out with the man across from him on each snap,” according to Lance Zierlein of NFL.com. What he was not noted for was his pass-catching ability.

After Telfer, surprise 2016 fourth-round NFL Draft pick Seth DeValve is the guy many Browns fans have their eye on heading into the 2017 season. After missing some time recovering from an injury, DeValve finished the 2016 season with 10 receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie season.

When he was selected out of Harvard, the Browns were ridiculed by draft analysts and NFL Draft fans alike. But some have come around on him since then, mainly because of his pass-catching ability, size and 4.68 40-yard dash speed.

Finally, I would not be doing my due diligence if I did not mention former Pitt tight end J.P. Holtz, who is still currently holding down a roster spot.

The 6’4” and 250 pounder racked up 81 receptions for 931 yards and 11 touchdowns during his four-year collegiate career, but went undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft and signed as an undrafted free agent with the team last May. Though we do not know what his NFL future holds with the Browns, his bio on the Browns team website does let us know his favorite movie is Step Brothers and he is a big fan of Luke Bryan and country music—which makes him pretty awesome in this writer’s book.

Is Tight End a Bigger Priority Than We Thought?

After previously dismissing the position as one of need, it appears the Browns could look to address tight end in the 2017 NFL Draft. Though many seem intrigued with Alabama’s O.J. Howard with the No. 12 pick, there are quite a few post-first round options who could fit the mold for the Browns.

The previously mentioned Shaheen has been discussed in the second round conversation of late, and he could be in play with the team’s second pick in the round. After him, Jake Butt of Michigan, Jordan Leggett of Clemson and Buckey Hodges of Virginia Tech are all prospects with excellent size for the position who are being slated in the third to fourth round range.

If the team decides to go the late route in the fifth round where they have three picks, a player like Jeremey Sprinkle of Arkansas is someone to keep an eye on. He is 6’5” and 252 pounds, runs a 4.69 40-yard dash and Rob Rang of CBS Sports wrote this about him, “Teams looking for a full-feature tight end will like Sprinkle, who appears just as satisfied with delivering a block in the running game as he is catching touchdowns.” Rang later compared him to former Jaguars tight end, Marcedes Lewis.

I do not know about you, but if the team is looking at adding some talent to the tight end position, they could do a lot worse than adding someone who compares to a guy who caught 351 passes for 4,184 yards and 28 touchdowns in his 11 years in the league. Especially if they took that player in the fifth round or later of the draft.
