Air Force wins 77-70 over The Citadel for Tourney title
AF shoots lights out in the second half and beats The Citadel by 7 after being behind at 2 at the half. Numbers and more to follow....congrats Falcons, 2nd year in a row Champion of the All-Military Classic Tournement. Mike Lyons with 30+pts and Kyle Greene with 19pts.
Air Force wins All-Military Classic Tournament for Second Straight Year
Congratulations to Air Force in a big win over The Citadel to capture this tournament. 'Win by the three or die by the three'.....did this factor in the game? The Citadel came in with two 245# players and their teammates clogging the lane playing a 2-3 zone for 40 minutes of the game, denying any opportunity to penetrate. So Air Force takes what they got and began shooting from the outside. Slower in the first half found the Falcons going into the locker room down by 2 at the half and shooting only 33% FG and 5-17 29% from the 3pt arc. But a dedicated decision worked to try to force it inside-out in the second half to give us better looks outside if we could not get the shot on the inside and the results? We lived by the THREE as we shot 10-17 59% from the arc finishing the game at 49% FG (9-15 2pt shots, 15-34 3pts) and 41% 3pt shooting.
Congratulations to the tourney MVP, Air Force's Mike Lyons who had a career high 33pts scoring just the opposite of yesterday by going 11-16 FG 7-12 3pt and 0 TO's. Mike was the go to guy for the entire game. He was in the zone and his teammates and the offense found him for the open shots. Another career high for a Falcon, Kyle Greene lit it up for 18pts on 4-9 from the 3pt arc.
Others stood out with their play in this win, a definite team win. AF commits only 8 TO's and forces 8 steals with 20pts off those steals. Todd plays 36mins with 5 assists and only 1 TO. Max Yon found ways to score with 10pts. While TaylorB only scored 3pts, he battled underneath versus the two 'big's' of The Citadel. MikeFitzgerald was hampered by fouls again but played aggressive defense and made a huge 3pt shot when the score had gone down to only a 2pt lead. Good bench minutes from Olesinski (2pts) and Williams, Earls, Michaels and Coggins.
Good win and good lessons learned. Still working on the rebounding but you could see the effort and attempts throughout the game, just could not beat the large bigs. Big number: 83% FT on 14-17. This is the second game of the season and the second game above 76%. I watch them shoot FT's every practice and it is working! First time in a long time that we went strictly against a zone. Second half was successful due to: Forcing inside out, Great passing and shot selection and the obvious one, we hit the shots. Good adjustments by coach and staff but still need to find more minutes off the bench from players that can also contribute to scoring. Three starters in the 30's in minutes played still too much as stated by Coach P. in the post-game interview.
Overall good win for Air Force. Next up: Western St (who lost to Wyoming) on 15 November and Regis on 18 November.
Good win, but I'm a little troubled by giving up the early lead in both games... NO reason to be down at the half to Army, much less the Citadel. I am happy with the halftime adjustments, but shoot... with this team we should have dominated these games from the start.
Thanks for the congrats. I think Army will surprise many this season.
Wandering....I wish we would take and run with the lead, but I think I like what I am seeing. Confidence and resiliency. Two games where we got behind but, instead of losing by double digits still win by (respectively) 11 and 7 points. And this is without Jutin Hammonds who 'should' be back end of semester.
The 5 seniors are leading and playing like seniors. After two games we have (rounded up) our seniors averaging 7, 9, 10, 15 and 26 points per game. Now we need the sophomores and freshmen off the bench to work to contribute minutes. AND points (currently one off the bench, Max Yon, is averaging 7.5ppg)....our much needed key to success.
Impressive debut and wins. No quit. Seniors played like Seniors. Bench contributions noteworthy but need more to reduce starters' playing time. Congratulations to Coaching staff and players who played like champions. GO FALCONS!
Two nice wins over the weekend. Teams will have stretches where they get behind during all games. What is impressive is that the Falcons came back and took control of both games in the second half.
The Falcons three-point shooting looks much improved, they are making their free throws and are playing solid match-up. The Falcons still need to improve thier rebounding on both ends, but especially on defense.
