Top Academy Kickers And Punters

Quality college kickers and punters are hard enough to find for the top schools. At the service academies they can take on an even bigger level of importance. Given the limited passing attacks these schools possess, most third and longs wind up becoming punting situations. Add in the kicker concerns most teams in college football have, and these guys can impact a game more than some would think.

5. Parker Herrington (K, Air Force)- Air Force head coach Troy Calhoun clearly didn't trust Herrington much in 2012, giving him only 10 field goal attempts all season. Only four of those attempts were 40 yards or longer, so the lack of a big leg hurt the Falcons. Harrington finished 46 of 47 on extra points.

4. David Baska (P, Air Force)- With a 39.2-yard average on 40 punts last season, Baska clearly could be better at changing field position for the Falcons, but nonetheless, he is still a decent punter by college standards. On a larger level, it's clear the special teams phase of Air Force football needs the most work in the buildup to the start of the season.

3. Dan Grochkowski (K, Army)- Grochkowski was 10 of 16 on field goals last season, finishing in a tie for second among school kickers on the four independent FBS teams. If there was one weakness in Grochkowski's game, it was extra points: He missed three out of 27, an alarming failure rate for such a simple kick.

2. Nick Sloan (K, Navy)- Sloan was perfect on his extra point attempts, hitting all 41 tries. He hit two out of every three field goals on the season. Sloan tied Grochkowski with 10 successful field goals for a total of 71 points on the year in 2012.

1. Pablo Beltran (P, Navy)- Navy as a group has the best special teams unit of the three FBS academy programs, and Beltran is a key reason why the Midshipmen enjoy that edge. His 43.6-yard average per punt was a top-20 national average last season. The improvement from his freshman to sophomore season was noticeable: His average rose 6 yards per punt.
