Air Force Report Card: Navy

Air Force fell to Navy 28-10 on Saturday in Annapolis. Falcons Report's D. Yates grades Air Force's performance in several key team areas.

PASSING OFFENSE: C
Air Force's Karson Roberts completed 6-of-14 passes for 67 yards and one interception late in the game. Nate Romine came in near the end of the game and completed one pass for 15 yards but his second pass was intercepted. Sam Gagliano, Jale Robinette and Garrett Griffin all had a pair of receptions. Gagliano had one drop. The Falcon offensive line allowed no sacks during the game.

RUSHING OFFENSE: C
The Falcons gained just 231 yards on 57 attempts. It was the team's third worst rushing performance this season. Broam Hart (18 carries, 67 yards) and Jon Lee (13 carries, 61 yards) led the Falcons in rushing. Anthony LaCoste scored the Falcons' only touchdown of the game in the second quarter on an 18-yard scamper. In the end it wasn't the best rushing performance for the Falcons. Navy took away the pitch outs and largely limited the Falcons to inside rushes.

PASSING DEFENSE: B
The Mids gained only 54 yards through the air against the Falcons. It was the Mids' worst passing performance, yardage wise, this season. Spence Proctor had one sack of Keenan Reynolds while Dana Luebbe and Nick Fitzgerald combined for another sack. Reynolds, who completed 6-of-10 passes, had his longest pass go for 17 yards but the Falcons were never able to get an interception.

RUSHING DEFENSE: B
Air Force held Navy to 273 yards rushing which is 28 yards less than the Mids averaged coming into the game. Previously the Mids gained 444 and 352 yards against Indiana and Delaware respectively. Keenan Reynolds led the Mids in rushing, picking up 126 (4.5 YPC) yards on 28 carries. Reynolds longest run during the game was for 17 yards. No other Navy rusher gained more than 39 yards. Chris Spears, Dana Luebbe and Reggie Barnes each had eight tackles to co-lead the Falcon defense.

SPECIAL TEAMS: B
Will Conant made a 45-yard field goal to give the Falcons an early 3-0 lead. Later he missed a 50-yard attempt early in the second quarter. David Baska had a great day punting for the Falcons. He punted three times for an over 42 yard average and had two of the three punts downed inside the 20. In the third quarter Baska boomed a punt 57 yards to the Navy 11.

COACHING: B
Head coach Troy Calhoun keeps marching his troops on through the season despite a tough schedule and a bevy of injuries, particularly at quarterback. Calhoun and his staff kept the team focused despite media reports that there would be no game with Navy due to the federal government shutdown. Even though the Falcons were playing a team that primarily runs they did show some improvement defending the pass. Reynolds is considered one of the best service academy passers and the Falcons kept him primarily under control.

OVERALL GRADE: C
The Falcon defense showed some improvement. Giving up just 28 points is a positive after allowing 195 combined points over the past four games. The offense played an opponent that knows how to stop the option and it showed with the 10-point scoring output. Air Force faces yet another challenge this week when it hosts San Diego State on Thursday night. It's a game the Falcons need to win and can win.
