Clune Rocks, Falcons Roll

AFA's Clune arena was packed and rockin' as more than 6,300 fans watched Air Force take another MWC team to the wood shed. Tonight the Falcons played BYU in the Falcons first home conference game of the season. The Falcons came out fast and never looked back as they went into the half leading the Cougars 42-19.

If you don't believe by now that the Falcons are for real and will be a factor in this season's Mountain West conference race well, you just haven't been following college basketball.  Joe Scott has this Air Force team playing dominant basketball, on offense and defense.  This group of talented Falcons (including the bench) plays each game with renewed confidence and energy, each victory bringing even more justifiable self-assurance and poise.   Joe Scott knew he was bringing forth a team of talented and young (just two starting seniors) but he also knew that it was time for his Falcons to step up to the next level, that being the ability to play each and every game with the expectation of winning.  This team has that expectation and it is paying off with big returns.

With a winning streak of 10 games under their belt, including two conference wins on the road, the Falcons came into their first home conference game against a favored and very talented BYU team.  The Falcons knew they had to play ‘their' game and get up early on the Cougars or face the possibility of getting behind early and playing into the Cougar's hands.  Air Force came out so fast, hitting virtually everything they shot and keeping the Cougars from any sort of easy scoring opportunity the game quickly became and Air Force game.  Brigham Young is a talented team and they are well coached but when the Falcons are on it's difficult for anyone to stop them.  BYU wanted to use their great size and talented center, 6-11, 280 lb, Rafael Araujo, to control the paint and make the inside points.  The Falcons wouldn't have anything to do with that plan as their usual swarming, smothering defense kept Araujo and most of the BYU team on their heels the entire night.  The only Cougar with a decent game was the very talented Mark Bigelow, this guy can play and he very seldom misses when he shoots.  Bigelow scored 19 points, while Araujo scored 12.

After leaving the Cougars at halftime with a dizzying 42-19 lead the crowd and Clune arena were really rockin' and anxious to see what the second half would bring in this already stunning game.  Bigelow scored the first five points of the second half to cut the Falcon lead to 18, but Air Force countered with a 13-4 run, including two pretty layups by Nick Welch, to push the Air Force lead to 55-28.  BYU never got closer than 20 points after that.

The top scorers for Air Force were Nick Welch with 20 points; A.J. Kuhl 14 points; Tim Keller 12 and Antoine Hood 11.  Five other Falcons scored in the game, including Joel Gerlach with 3.  Falcon freshman forward Jacob Burtschi injured what appeared to be his right shoulder but there was no word at games end on his chances to play Monday.

The Falcons are now 13-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.  They face the 15-4, 3-1 (MWC), Utah Utes at 7 PM (MT) Monday night at Clune arena.  The Utes lost to New Mexico at the pit Saturday night by a 70-54 score.
